Israel Athletes Leave for
USSR Basketball Tourney

TEL AVIV, (JTA) - Members
of an Israeli championship bas-
ketball team left here for Sofia
en route to the Soviet Union
where an inter-national basket-
ball tournament will open May
20. The members of the team
will pick up the entry visas for
the USSR in Sofia,

JERUSALEM-The largest flour mill ever constructed here
started operations recently, backed by a 1E30,000 loan from State
of Israel Bonds. Designed and equipped with ultra modern detail,
the plant operates around the clock on an eight-man shift.
Working at maximum capacity, the mill can turn out 100 tons of

flour per day.

Israeli Wrestler Is _Alan of Faith

By WILLIAM OSHER
Strong willed, handsome and
deceptively powerful; Raphael
Halpern of Israel, an ordained
rabbi, is determined to become
the heavyweight wrestling
champion of the world within
the year. He pursues this
strange objective with the zeal
of a missionary and in the
process has aroused the wres-
tling world to an almost unani-
mous frenzy in its desire to stop
him in his tracks.
The unanimity on the part
of the wrestling fraternity has
been brought about by Halpern's
seeming ignorance of the game's
facts of life. He knows nothing
about carrying an opponent, re-
fuses to make a bout theatrical,
and will physically mangle the
person suggesting a dive. His
sole intention upon entering the
ring is to make short shrift of
his adversary, for as he has
stated, "The longer the match
the greater the chance of in-
jury." The good Israeli's plan of
action has therefore resulted in
a five minute average for over
60 bouts in the less than three
months he has been on these
shores*. .
Orthodox in his religious prac-
tice and still devoted to his
studies when not engaged in the
wrestling arena, Halpern studied
for twelve years at Jerusalem's
Hevron Yeshiva, where he was

Cooperation Stressed as
Alternative to Monopoly

"The Cooperative Road to
Abundance, the Alternative to
Monopolism and Communism,"
by E. R. Bowen, is an original
and scientific analysis of eco-
nomic goals, motives, methods
and systems in which the au-
thor shows /that material abun-
dance for all is now potentially
possible as a result of the de-
velopment of automatic power.
He shows how we should ap-
ply each of these economic mo-
tives through the balancing of
the three economic methods of
individual competition, group-
cooperation and social-compul-
sion.
He makes a clear and concise
comparison between the three
economic systems of capitalism;
communism and cooperation on
the basis of their ability to bal-
ance these methods, apply these
motives and attain these goals.
An unusual and significant
number of quotations from out-
standing leaders in major fields
of thought and action support
the idea that "cooperation, not
competition, is the password to
the future."
Into this book, published by
Henry Schuman, 20 E. 70th, New
York 21, Mr. Bowen has backed
wisdom gained from a life-time
of practiCal experience and sus-
tained study as a factory and
office employee, advertising and
sales manager, director and vice
president of Agricultural Power
Machinery Manufacturing Co.
He was for 13 years executive
secretary of Cooperative League
National Federation of Consum-
ers' Cooperatives.

ordained at 18 by Rabbis Aron
Cohen and Moshe Hevroni. A
disciple of the revered Israeli,
Rabbi Avraham Yeshiah Kore-
litz, kno'w to the world of Jewish.
scholarship as the Hazon Ish,
Halpern has a special clause in
his contract which states that
he does not -have to wrestle or
travel on the Sabbath or holy
days. He quotes the Hazon. Ish„
whom he consults before making
any important moves, as telling
him that, as an Orthodox wres-
tler, he could bring a great Kid--
dush Hashem (Sanctification of
the Name) to Orthodox Jewry
and to Israel.

Halpern carries his ortho•
doxy to ringside, where before
a bout he dons a skull cap and
offers prayer for victory.
At 18 Halpern was a scrawny,

almost emaciated 140 pound.
weakling. Now at 25 he is a
model of physical perfection, a
six-foot, 215-pound wrestler, who
embodies all the features of a
typical American magazine ad-
vertisement for "the body beau-
tiful.' This transformation was
brought about when Halpern
saw a physical culture magazine
photograph of Mr. America and
was inspired to improve his own
physique. He started to work out
daily in a body building program.
of his own design; that culmi-
nated in his winning the 1951.
title of Mr. Israel in a field of 40
contestants.
Now director of the physical
training programs in the close
to 50 gyms throughout Israel,
including his own three estab-
lishments in Haifa, Tel Aviv and
Jerusalem, Halpern has trained
more . than 10,000 young men to
his own methods. More than
30% of these were soldiers and
officers. He is a veteran of over
200 mat victories in Europe, the
Middle East and Israel.

U. S.-Israel Tire Venture
Shows First Year Profit

NEW -YORK, (JTA) -The first
year's operation of the Alliance
Tire and Rubber Co., Ltd., pio-

prise, has not only measured.
up to original production esti-
mates but exceeded even the
most optimistic forecasts; Ar-
thur Taubman, president of the
company, declared here.
