Hello Boys and Girls:
I hope that by the time you
read this the warm May sun-
shine will have replaced the
heavy rains, and that you are
out in your yards and play-
grounds, busy with marbles, rol-
ler skates, doll carriages and
baseball bats. Sometimes spring
fever hits the boys in such 'a
way that they are prompted to
invest in—slingshots ! Mothers
and schoolteachers object to
these, and rightly so. And yet
—once upon a time, a slingshot
saved our people from a cruel
warrior. Here's the story .. .
5 5 5
When King David was just a
boy, the people of Israel were at
war with their neighbors, the
Philistines. One day, David's
father, Jesse, said to him: "Son,
three of your older brothers are
serving in King Saul's army.
Will you travel to the valley
of Elah, where our troops are
gathered, and take them this
basket of homemade p r o v i-
sions?"
'So David to the supply of
corn, bread and . cheese and
sought out his brothers, Eliab,
Abinadab and Sliammah, sol-
diers of King Saul.
"What is the • news?" asked
David, as he reached his broth-
ers' tent.
"Very sad," answered Eliab.
"Stay with us until morning,
and you can see for yourself."
When dawn began to appear
across the valley, David went
out of the tent and looked to
the neighboring hill, where the
Philistine _army was encamped.
Suddenly in the center of the
camp, he saw the figure of a
man, but such a man! He could
hardly believe his eyes.
A giant stood there. He was
taller than the most stalwart
of the Israelite soldiers. He had
a helmet of brass on his huge
head, and wore a heavy coat of
mail to protect his brawny body.
There were greaves of brass
upon his legs and a javelin of
brass between his broad should-
ers. He carried a huge spear,
and his armor-bearer went be-
fore him, carrying a gigantic
shield.
Then the giant's voice rolled
out across the valley. "Here is
Goliath, a Philistine s o 1 d i e r.
Choose one man from among
you, soldiers of Saul, and let
him fight me. If he can kill me,
then all the Philistines will be

your servants. But if I win, then
you shall serve us!"
"You see why we are in ter-
ror,• said David' s'. brother.
"Each morning Goliath chal-
lenges us, but not a man among
us could fight him."
David turned, away from his
brother. "I would like to try,"
he said. Eliab and all the sol-
diers nearby laughed. "You, are
just a boy!" they scoffed.
Word of David's daring came
to King Saul, however, and he
called the lad to him. "What
makes you think you could sur-
vive against the giant?" asked
the king.
"As I cared for my father's
sheep," David answered, "a lion
and a bear came and' stole
lamb from my flock. But I ran
after them and caught them
and -killed the wild beasts. The
Lord that delivered me out of
the paw of the lion and the
bear will surely deliver me out
of the hand of the Philistine."
The king was satisfied. He
tried to dress David in his own
heavy armor. But David re-
fused, saying he was not used to
wearing armor. Instead, he took
from his pocket a boy's weapon
—his slingshot. He chose five
smooth stones out of a nearby
brook and put them in his shep-
herd's bag. And he went out
across the valley to answer the
giant's challenge.
When Goliath saw Da v id
coming toward him, he laughed.
"Is this the mighty soldier you
send against me?" he roared.
David paid no attention. He
reached into his bag for a stone
and fitted it into his sling. Then
he drew back his hand and let
the stone fly through the air.
Before the giant knew what was
happening, the stone hit him
in the. forehead and he fell to
the ground. David ran to him,
took the giant's own sword, and
slew him.
A great cheer arose from the
Israelite camp.. The men, were
given new 'hope and . new
strength when they ,saw _what
young David had done. ' They
gathered their arms, gave chase
to the Philistines, and c o n-
quered them.

Just remember, if you have
a. slingshot, that it can do ser-
ious damage if not handled with
great care. Your outclOor play
will probably be much more fun
if you stick with baseballs and
skates. -

Fine Montreal

Synefsgegue For 1-1olcring Classes

MONTREAL, (JTA) --A Mon-
treal court has fined a syna-
gogue for holding classes in the
building without previously ob-
taining a permit to operate a
school. The case arises from the
attempts of people in various
outlying areas of Montreal to
prevent new synagogues from
conducting religious classes and
services,in a manner which they
find disturbing.
The court decided that the
defendant congregation, Chas-
ide Belz Umachzike Hadac, had
been transformed from a syna-
gogue into "a synagogue and
school for children." The court
fined the congregation $25 and.
imposed a similar fine for every
day that the school continues

to operate in violation, of city
ordinances. The congregagants
number about . 50 or 60 recent
immigrants, most of whom are
survivors of concentration
camps.
