By GRACE JAN WALDMAN
In the language of libraries,
"‘Hebraica" is the category un-
under which falls a collection of
material dealing with the Hebrew
language and culture, Yiddish,
Judaism, Zionism, the Bible,
Jewish art, literature, music,
law, social and political treatis-
es.
The Hebraica Division of the
Library of Congress, formerly
part of "Orientalia," a word de-
rived by similar literary gym-
nastics, composes three rooms on
the periphery of the enormous
reading and research room in
the Jefferson annex , and • is
headed by Dr. Lawrence Mar-
wick.
Marwick is a professional ex-
pert on the Middle East, having
studied the subject at the Eng-
lish National University in bai-
ro and at the University of CIA-
eago. He received his Ph.D. at
Dropsie College for Hebrew and
Cognate Learning in Philadel-
phia, then did intensive research
at the British Museum in Lon-
don. After further years of study
at Oxford and Cambridge, he
joined the army and spent five
years as a paratrooper, then was
called to direct the Hebraica Di-
vision of the Library of. Congress.
This division had its incep-
tion with a gift of 19936 vol-
umes•and pamphlets brought to-
gether over a period of many
years by Ephraim Deinard and
Jacob H. Schiff of New York
City. In the 40 years since the
establishment of the collection,
45,000 volumes in Hebrew, 10,-
000 in Yiddish, and 15,000 mis-
cellaneous voluMeS have been
added. Its scope covers a period
of three and one half millenia.
Marwick furnishes Hebraica
references and information to
Congress, t h e Departments . of
State, Defense and Interior, the
Army Map Service and the Vet-
erans Administration.
During Marwick's four-year
administration, the division has
had reference inquiries from
foreign countries. Marwick in-
stigated the first international
loan of Hebraica, which was dis-
patched to Mexico. Microfilm
copies of the division's resources
have been sent to Israel.

ica reserves in the Library's ex-
clusive stacks, where we walked

land."
"Bring Ye the whole tithes into
the store-house."
Thus spoke the Lord of hosts
to Malachi.
Double your tithes and treble
your gifts,
More bounteously shall they re-
turn to thee.
Give with joy—doubly blessed is
he who gives,
For he giveth to himself,
And in giving thus he lives.
And the nations shall awaken,
Call ye happy, call ye great,
Hates and feuds shall be for-

Worms. Cemetery Desecrated
FRANKFORT, (JTA) — The.
ancient Jewish cemetery at
Warms, near Mainz, 'believed to
be .one of the two or three old-
est Jewish cemeteries in Europe
to come down through the last
1,000 years intact, has been de-
secrated by vandals. A total of
138. tombstones were smashed.
The municipality of Worms
had accepted responsibility for
maintenance and care of the
cemetery, in return- for which
the Jews had agreed to lend the
local museum valuable ritual
and art objects dating back to
the Middle Ages. Among these
was a chair used by Rashi, the
noted Biblical .commentator of
the 11th century. Rashi studied
at a local yeshiva in Worms.
