Ambassador Eban To Speak
At Israel Bond Dinner, June 1
Abba Eban, Israeli Ambassa-
dor to the United States, will be
guest of honor at a dinner spon-

ization, June 1, 6 p.m. at the
Statler Hotel. Abe Kasle will
serve as dinner committee chair-
man.
The Ambassador, who also
serves as Israel's permanent
representative to the UN, is a
South African by birth. He was
educated in England, graduat-
ing from Cambridge with high
honors. After the war, he settled
in Jerusalem as Chief Instructor
of the Middle East Center of
Arabic Studies. In 1946, at the
invitation of Dr. Chaim Weiz-
mann, he joined the Jewish
Agency for Palestine and worked
in the field of Arab-Jewish re-
lations. An experienced linguist,
he is author of the book: "The
Middle East and World Politics."

Kasle, a member of the na-
tional board of the Bond organ-
ization, announces that promi-
nent persons are being organ-
ized to serve on the Abba Eban
dinner committee. These names
will soon be released. An active
community leader, Kasle is vice-
president of the Jewish Welfare
Federation and a member of the
national board of the United
Jewish Appeal. For the past
eight years he has served as
president of the United Hebrew
Schools. He is also a board mem-
ber of Sinai Hospital and the
,local Israel bond organization.
Center Book Forum
To Hear Wayne Author
Prof. Arthur Kornhauser, of
Wayne University's department
of psychology, will review his
book, "Detroit, As the People See
It," in the Author Meets the
Forum series of the JeWish Cen-
ter Book Forum.
Miss Dorothy Bendix, of the
Detroit Public Library, will
moderate the discussion. The
program is scheduled for 9 p.m.,
at the Woodward Jewish Center.
Dr. Harry Lerner will interview
Prof. Kornhauser for 15 minutes,
prior to general audience ques-
tioning.

Lebanese Ambassador Delivers Second
Anti-Israel Lecture Before Economic Club
For the second time in three
months, an anti-Israel - lecture
was heard before the Detroit
Economic Club.
On Monday, Dr. Charles H
Malik, Lebanon's ambassador to
the United States, charged that
"rightly or wrongly, the Arabs
are convinced that Israel is but
a bridgehead from which the
Jews will sweep across and con-
quer the entire Near East."
In response to a question why
40,000,000 Arabs are afraid of
1,500,000 Israelis, he said that it
is because the Western world,
especially Britain and the United
States, are supporting Israel. He
also charged that Israel is be-
ing armed while the Arabs are
denied weapons. (Editor's Note:
This is well known to be con-
trary to fact—the present Israeli
complaint against Britain, es-
pecially being that Egypt is be-
ing armed while Israel is unable
to secure modern weapons).

A native of Israel, Dr. Biran
is presently touring the United
States on behalf of the $500,000,-
000 State of Israel Independ-
ence Bond Issue. He became a
member of government service
in 1937, when Great Britain held
the Mandate over Palestine, ad-
vanced in Government service to
become assistant to the British
Governor of Jerusalem, and in
July, 1948, became Assistant
Military Governor of Jerusalem,
at the time it was isolated and
under siege.
Dr. Biran, who is in charge
the civil administration of Is-
rael's capital city, has seen the
Jewish population of Jerusalem
grow from 70,000 to over 150,000
since 1949. He has been a mem-
ber of the special committee ad-
ministering the armistice be-
tween Israel and Jordan.
Beside his civic duties, Dr.
Biran is a noted archaeologist,
having participated in numer-
ous expeditions in Iraq and oth-
er parts of the Middle East. He
acquired his advance education
hi this country, studying at the
University of Pennsylvania and
Johns Hopkins University, where
he received his Ph.D.
