Architectural Forum maga- zine, in its current issue, de- votes a 16-page spread to three new synagogues created by famed architect, Eric Mendel- sohn. Among the three imposing structures is the 'temple and community center planned by Cong. Emanuel, in Grand Rap- ids. Designed in 1948, construc- tion was begun in 1950 and is not yet completed: The center is planned in a semi-circular arrangement, and features an auditorium, social lounge, school, offices; swim ming pool, tennis 'courts - and sundry other facilities. The principal feature of the auditorium is a 'moveable ark, which. on High Holy Days can be brought from its place in the recessed wall to the center of the podium. The s y n a g o g u e, containing 17,000 square feet, is being built at a cost of $360,000. The magazine article features the recent ly - completed Bnai Amoona. Synagogue in St. Louis, which Mendelsohn built as "a challenge . . . in designing a sacred building in the spirit of our age of great changes." Also described is Temple Emanu- El in Dallas, Tex.
