Feature Article on Rocket Propulsion
In Yearbook of Technion Society

Atomic energy as a limitless
power source for propelling
rockets has been completely
overestimated, a scientist who
heads the Navy's Viking Rocket
Research Project wrote in an
article, "The Prospects for Space
Flight," published in the Tech-
nion Yearbook, issued by the
American Technion Society,
1000 Fifth Ave., New York.
The writer, Milton W. Rosen,
points out that such a factor as
the temperature limit at which
a rocket operates is a more vital
factor - regardless of whether
the heat generated is by nuclear
or molecular reaction.
Although no space ships have
yet been built, Rosen empha-
sizes the importance of "replen-
ishing the cupboard of basic re-
search on rockets." One of the
Viking rockets he directed has
ascended 136 miles, a record still
unsurpassed for single stage
rockets.
The 294-page Yearbook, edited
by William Cohen, contains 21
original, illustrated papers. The
book is divided into three sec-
tions: "Science — New Ideas,"
"Israel — Science Utilized," and
"American Technion Society."
This last group features the
organization which supports the
Technion in Haifa, Israel's In-
stitute of Technology, in whose
behalf the Yearbook is pub-
lished.

DETROIT JEWISH NEWS- .--1
