At the Golden Book Dinner
of the Gold Star Parents of
the Jewish War Veterans. we
learned at first hand what the
oraanization does and stands
for. At that time, we extended
an invitation to the Honorary
President of the Gold Star
Parents to write for this
column . . . We present Meyer
Silverman as our guest col-
umnist.

parents, we appreciate t h e
chance to tell your . r e a d e r s
something about the Gold Star
Parents of the JWV. Fortunately,
the number of our prospective
members is limited and we pray
that it shall never become any
larger.

• * *
IN EACH INSTANCE it was a

personal tragedy that drew us
together into the ranks of the
Gold Star Parents — tragedies
which we hope we are turning
into constructive community ac-
tivity. Always indelibly in my
mind is an experience at one of
the early organizing meetings of
our group. One of the parents,
still forlorn with personal
mourning, declared that he
could no longer eat or sleep and
that to him life was no longer
tolerable. I shall never forget
the words of the late and vener-
able Isaac Rosenthal, who rose
at this point. "I eat, I sleep, I
lead a fairly normal life," he
said, and continued, "every man
in this room would have pre-
ferred to give his own life rather
than the life of his son, but
that was the will of the Lord.
"It may be that because of our
sons and all the other boys who
made the supreme sacrifice that
we have an Israel today, and in
our own country have main-
tained a way of life that is worth
dying for." Those inspired re-
marks summarized for me the
whole reason for being of a Gold
Star Parents group.
* * *
WHEN, AS a group of parents,
we assembled, it was for the
purpose of assisting in the diffi-
cult task of getting information
for the Memorial Room a n d
Lounge which the JWV planned
to include in its then contem-
plated building. Samuel Rhodes,
then president of the Memorial
Home Association, Harry Madi-
son, and others, were raising
funds for the structure which
was to be a gift from JWV to
the parents and to the commun-
ity. Our part was simply to be
one of advising in the planning
and helping to obtain the need-
ed information.
* * *
THIS PRELIMINARY meeting,
however, sparked something big-
ger. Meeting with JWV members
in our common effort, we be-
came impressed with the im-
portance of the work of that
great organization which, among
other objectives, keeps alive the
memory of the heroic record of
American Jews in this country's
wars. Incidentally, JWV, since
the disbanding of the Grand
Army of the Republic, is the old-
est veterans group in the United
States.
* *
THE PART THAT Jews have
played along with other Ameri-
cans in the service of our coun-
try was impressed upon us on
July 4, 1946, when we visited our
son's grave at a U.S. military
cemetery in Foy, Belgium. There
among the 2800 graves were 250
marked by the Star of David.

TO US THE Memorial Home
is not only a building of brick
and granite but is a symbol as
well of Americanism and patri-
otism. More Homes of this kind

most treasured possessions of the

stein, chairman of the board of
trustees; and Max Raimi and
Burt Applebaum, trustees.
Present and prospective resi-
dents of the Oak Park area,
meeting regularly for several
weeks, have planned the ground-
work for the traditional syna-
gogue. A lot has been purchased
and building will commence fol-
lowing approval of zoning re-
strictions.
The new group is not to be
confused with the Oak Park
Synagogue and Center, a Con-
servative congregation which
has been holding meetings for
several months.
Cong. Beth Am hopes to at-
tract young families who are
interested in holding modern,
traditional services. An adult
study group has already been
instituted, and plans are being
formulated for religious, youth
and social activities.
An open meeting is scheduled
for May '7, at Andrew Jackson

by their very existence prove an
effective answer to that rabble
rousing breed who attack Jewish
patriotism. It is a fact of which
we are proud that the Memorial
Home in Detroit has the distinc-
tion of being the first and the
finest one of its kind in the
country.
* * *
OUR EFFORT IN Detroit has
not been confined to this single
activity of the Memorial Home.
Our members and our funds
have gone to veterans hospitals,
have been directed for the re-
habilitation and for the help of
needy veterans families — con-
ducted on a non-sectarian basis.
* * *
THE WORK OF the Detroit
group of the Gold Star Parents
has been such as to command
the respect and the attention
of others from outside our own
city. Among my unforgettable
experience as a part of the Gold
Star Parents is the visit paid to
our Memorial Home by Senator
Herbert Lehman, himself a Gold
