Dr. Danby of London,
Christian Authority
On Rabbinics, Dies

NEW HAVEN, Conn.—Word
has been received here of tha
recent death in England of Dr.
Herbert Danby, noted Hebrew
scholar at Oxford University.
England, and a leading contrib-
utor to Judaica Research at Yale
University.
Dr. Danby, Regius Professor
of Hebrew and Canon of Christ
Church at Oxford, was one of
the foremost authorities in the
field of ancient Rabbinics, and -
his translation of "Mishnah" is
considered by scholars as a
modern classic.
Julian J. Obermann, Sterling
Professor of Semitic Languages
and Chairman of Judaica • Re-
search at Yale, said that the
greater part of Dr. Danby's work
in the past two years was de-
voted to the Yale research pro-
gram.
One of his works, "The Book
of Offerings" of the Code of
Maimonides, was published by
the Yale Press in 1950 as part
of the Yale Judaica Series. A
second volume of the Code, "The
Book of Clearness," one of the
most difficult and important
works in all of• Jewish sacred
law, will be published at Yale
next fall.

Hyman Rottenberg's
Death Follows Month
After 50th Anniversary

Orthodox Jewry in Detroit
last week mourned the death of
Mr. Hyman Rottenberg, one of
the city's most ardent workers
for the Yeshivath Beth Yehu-
dah.
Death came April 15 to the
Rottenberg home at 2466 High-
land where only a month be-
fore the house was the scene
of much excite-.
ment and fes-
tivity when Mr.
Rottenberg and
his wife, Pearl,
were celebrat-
:Iing their fiftieth
wedding anni-
versary.
As a token of
his esteem for
the Yeshivah,
Mr. Rottenberg

ents should be given to the Beth
Yehudah Schools to pay off a
new lot which has been pur-
chased as a playground.
Mr. Rottenberg, a druggist
here for 22 years, was a presi-
dent of Cong. Bnai David, and
served on its board of directors
for 20 years.
Funeral services were held at
Ira Kaufman Chapel, with in-
terment in Bnai David Ceme-
tery. Besides his wife, he leaves
his sons, Dr. Leon and Samuel,
of Detroit, and Dr. Coleman, of
Fresno, Calif.; daughters, Mrs.
Ethel Diamond, Mrs. Helen Rom
and Mrs. Betty Fishman, of De-
troit, and Mrs. Belle Yanover, of
New York; and 10 grandchil-
dren.
A memorial fund has been es-
tablished in Mr. Rottenberg's
memory by Ladies of Yeshivath
Beth Yehudah, whose secretary,
Mrs. M. Miller, 2292 Elmhurst, is
accepting contributions.

Starr Memorial Volume

The Conference on Jewish Re-
lations announces the publica-
tion of the "Joshua Starr Me-
morial Volume," composed of 19
scholarly studies in history and
philosophy. The editors of the
volume are Abraham G. Duker,

Mosely and Moshe Perlmann.
Scholars from Europe, Israel
and America are represented in
this tribute to Dr. Joshua Starr
(1907-1949), who was an out-
standing authority in Jewish
and Byzantine history and lit-
erature.

Morris Weinberg Dies

Morris Weinberg, formerly
of Pennington Dr., died April
9, in Miami Beach, Fla., after
a prolonged illness. Services
were held April 12, at Hebrew
Benevolent Chapel, with in-
terment in Hebrew Memorial
Park. Rabbi Joshua Sperka
and Cantor Hyman Adler of-
ficiated.
Mr. Weinberg was the own-
er-manager of the Livernois
Public Market until his re-
tirement several years ago.
He was a member of Bnai
Brith Pisgah Lodge and an
