Detroit Chaplain Is

CAMP SAN LUIS OBISPO-
"Become a chaplain and see the
world." Exhibit A: the story of
Chaplain (1st. Lt.) Nathan Es-
tersohn, who has been an Army
chaplain for nine months and
has already traveled thousands
of miles.
A native of Detroit, Chaplain
Estersohn was ordained in 1951,
after graduating
f r om Yeshiva
University in
New York. He
was rabbi of the
"Gates of Right-
eousness" Syna-
gogue in North
Hollywood, Cal-
if., until his en-
trance into mil-
itary service.
His first post • Estersohn
was at Camp Cooke, Calif. A few
months later he was off to Fort
Slocum, New York, to attend
chaplaincy school. He returned
to California to become the first
Jewish chaplain at Camp San
Luis Obispo after its reactiva-
tion as a Signal Corps Training
Center.
He remained long enough to
conduct a highly successful To-
rah convocation in which five
distinguished rabbis from Cali-
fornia participated. Then he
took a leave to accept the high-
est degree in Jewish theological
learning, "Semicha," from his
Alma Mater in New York.
He touched home base for a
week, then was off to the Desert
Rock maneuvers in Nevada to
conduct Passover services for
s oldiers participating in the
atomic weapons tests there.
This month he will leave for
orea. "But what's a few more
