On Exile of Spinoza
Editor, The Jewish News:
It is of interest to know that
there is still a nucleous of Sab-
batai Zvis extant in Adriano-
polis (European Turkey). They
believe that He is certain to
appear some time in the remote
future. Their creed is a mixture
of Islamic and Jewish. They
are designated by the Turks as
the Domosnehs. In our history
we find many false Messiahs,
such as David Rubeni, Solomon
Malcho, the Frankists, Alroys,
etc.

Beth El's President
Received His Start
From Firestone, Jr.
"In brotherhood we have an
atomic idea whose chain reac-
tion can spread to the hearts
and minds - of people everywhere.
Let us use this powerful force
widely and wisely."
The speaker was Harvey S.
Firestone, Jr. He. was address-
ing the Detroit Round Table of
Catholics, Jews and Protestants.
The chairman of the Fire-
stone Tire & Rubber Company
had been introduced by Leonard
N. Simons, president of Temple
Beth El-a man who knew that
Firestone not only preach e'd
brotherhood, but practiced it as
well.
It was the Firestone Co. that
24 years ago aided the then-
young Simons-Michelson adver-
tising agency. The district
manager of the Firestone Co.
had asked Dick Hoy, of The De-
troit News, to recommend an
advertising agency to him. Being
friendly with the two partners
in the young agency, Hoy sug-
gested them, with the comment:
"They're a couple of Jewish
boys who are real go-getters."
Hoy later told the two men
that the manager replied: "Fire-
stone doesn't care what church
they go to. What we want to
know is, can they write an ad
that gets results and are they
nice people?"
That was the beginning of a
tie-up between the Firestone
Co. and the now-prosperous ad-
vertising agency. And sitting
in the audience were those who
knew that Firestone meant what
he said when he declared: "We
must do more than merely
preach freedom. We must prac-
tice it!"
Jewish Leftist Resigns from
Communist Party in Brazil
RIO DE JANEIRO, (JTA)-
Shalom Schwartz, a leader of the
Jewish Communist group in Por-

Soviet Union for its recent anti-
Semitic campaign. Dr. Schwartz
said he had been a supporter of
the Communist Party for 30
years but that he was compelled
to turn against it because of the
recent "naked-anti-Jewish cam-
paign."
