Ezekiel Solomon, the first Jew in Michigan, was one of the organizers in Mackinac of what is claimed to be the first depart- ment store in the United States in 1779. 2. The first Jews to be men- tioned in a Detroit City Direc- tory are Solomon Bendix and Moses Rindskopf. Their names appear in the Directory of 1845. 3. The first Jew to hold politi- cal office in Michigan was Ed- ward Kanter of Detroit. He was,.' among other things, a member of the State Legislature in 1857. 4. Dr. Isaac M. Wise, the foun- der . of Reform Judaism in the United States, visited Detroit for the first time in 1857. 5. The first Michigan Rabbi to preach sermons in English was Dr. Isidor Kalisch of Detroit's Temple Beth El, who served as Rabbi from 1864 to 1866. 6. The first Michigan Rabbi to preach in a church was Dr. Hen- ry Zirndorf of Detroit's Temple Beth El. He preached in the Church of Our . Father (Uni- tarian Universalist) in 1882. 7. Jewish farming in Michigan goes back to 1882 when Lazarus Silberman, a Chicago banker, assisted 12 families to settle at Carp Lake in Emmet County, about six miles south of Mack- inac Straits. . 8. The first and only Jewish U.S. Congressman in Michigan was Julius Houseman of Grand Rapids. He served from 1883 to 1885. 9.
