A FEW WEEKS AGO, we made
mention of the fact that the
Jewish Community Center on
Woodward was to be sold to the
city for $460,000, to be used as
a parks and recration commun-
ity center . . . However, accord-
ing to the Detroit Times, it ap-
pears that a snag in the oint-
ment has- turned up, and sale of
the J•C, which is soon to be
abandoned in favor of a new lo-
cation at Sutherland and Seven
Mile Rd., may be killed . . . Pur-
chase of the building had been
urged by the Dept. of Parks and
Recreation, but, - says the Times,
members of the city plan com-
mission, who inspected t h e
building called the center a
"white elephant." ... The article
stated that chief complaints
were that the building is "obso-
lete," affords neither outdoor
parking nor recreational space
and that maintenance costs
would quickly eliminate any
savings from the reduced pur-
chase price (the original figure
set by owners of the property
was $690,000) . . . The Aaron De-
Roy Memorial building consists
of three units built between
1933 - and 1939 around two re-
modeled houses . . . and until
recently, had been a major back-
bone in Jewish communal serv-
ice.

HILDA HARTMAN, the attrac-
tive president of the Harry B.
Keida.n Chapter of Bnai Brith,
stopped the show cold, recently,
at the "Suppressed Desire" party
sponsored by the gals of the
Bnai Brith Council at Parkside
Hall . . . Hilda's soulful rendition
of "I Wanna Get Married" . . .
was matched only by her strik-
ing costume ... an old fashioned
blue nitie, an ice blue wedding
veil and a small nosegay which
she carried.

DANIEL NEWMAN, husband of
Dina Halpern, first lady of the
Yiddish stage, was in Detroit re-
cently. He carries in his
pocket a classified ad clipped
from a New York paper ... "Man
wanted to work in dynamite
factory; must be willing to trav-
el . ." That recalls the solemn
warning made by Samuel Gold-
wyn, last year . .. "Gentlemen,
do not underestimate the danger
of the atom bomb. It's dyna-
mite!"

MAJ. MAX GURWIN, former
tennis champ around these
parts, now serving at Selfridge
Field, tells of a Detroit lad who
was suffused with family pride
.. "My father," he announced,
"is the best darned tennis player
in Michigan." . . . Noting that
he had not made the desired
impression he amended his
statement to "My father is the
best darned tennis player in the
whole world." . . . His father
thought it time to tone him
down a bit and Said, "Bernie,
better just say I'm the best
tennis player in our house." . .
"But that's not true, daddy,"
said the boy. "Mommy is."

DR. AARON FARBMAN, prom-
i n e n t local surgeon, is t h e
seventh physician to join the
Jewish Center Symphony Or-
chestra ... He'll be part of the
group accompanying Georges
Miquelle, who is scheduled to
play as soloist for the next con-
cert . . . and take part in the
American premiere of Julius
Chajes' Concerto for Cello and
Orchestra.

RUBEN SELFMAN writes from
Hollywood about the new clerk
at the Twentieth Century-Fox
studio in Beverly Hills who was
standing in front of the Admin-
istration Building when he saw a
driverless Cadillac rolling down
the incline to the entrance on
Pico Boulveard . • He raced
across the lawn, jumped into
the moving car, and jammed on
the emergency brake . . . At this
point, Darryl . Zanuck, king bee
of the studio, appeared from be-
hind the car . . . "Gee, Mr. Zan-
uck, "boasted the clerk, "this
Cadillac was running down the
hill and I stopped it." .. . "Yes,
I know," said Mr. Zanuck grim-
ly. "I was pushing it."

Three members of the Israel
Caravan that toured Jewish
communities in the past month
— Martha Schlamme, Shmuel
Freshko and Mort Freeman —,
were enthusiastically acclaimed
March 26, at a meeting of the
Zionist Organization of Detroit
at the Beth Aaron Synagogue.
A. C. Lappin, ZOD president,
presided. Greetings were extend-
ed by Rabbi Benjamin H. Gorre-
lick. A membership appeal was
made by Rabbi Leon Fram.
Miss Schlamme promptly won
the hearts of her audience with
her Israeli, Yiddish and English
songs and an Irish tune.
Freshko, who played his own
composition, showed great skill
as a musician. Freeman, master
of ceremounies, sang several
songs and showed keen under-
standing of the Israeli composi-
tions. He also seconded the ZOD
membership appeal with a brief
address.
