Communists Follow Anti-Semitic
'ne in UN; Denounced by Israel

—Bitter attacks on the Zionist movement and
UNITED NATIONS, N. Y., (JTA)
on the State of Israel as alleged agents of American aggression against the countries of
the Soviet bloc featured the unsuccessful Communist attempt this week to have the Unit-
ed Nations condemn the U.S. for allegedly financing espionage and subversion behind
the Iron Curtain with Mutual Security Administration funds.

The repetition from the forum of the UN Political Committee of the Communist anti-
Jewish allegations brought forth blistering replies from Israel and the spokesmen of the free

nations.
Delegates of the six Arab States, however, gleefully welcomed the Communist attacks on
Israel and the Jews and sought to reopen the whole Palestine question in discussion of the "Zion-
ist conspiracy." All six abstained from voting on the Czechoslovak resolution, explaining that
they supported the Communist charges of the conspiratorial and aggressive nature of "interna-
tional Zionism." Only the five members of the Soviet bloc voted for the resolution .

Czech Envoy Opens Attack on Jews
The Jewish issue was injected early in the debate by Vaclaw David, Czechoslovak Foreign
Minister, who described the Zionists as "elements in a conspiracy" to overthrow the Czechoslo-
vak Government. The Communist spokesman was immediately challenged by Golda Myerson,
came under attack from Dr. Julius Katz-
temporary head of the Israel delegation, who; in turn,
Suchy, himself a Jew, speaking for Poland.
Mrs. Myerson said that Israel would present before the General Assembly "the record of
the policies of anti-Jewish incitements adopted by the governments of Czechoslovakia, the USSR
and other states allied with them." The Czechoslovak and Polish spokesmen replied that at that
time they would reply to what the former called the "loud and •incendiary statements" of the
"lady from Israel."
Soviet delegate Andrei Gromyko, howev er, told the session that his delegation consid-
ered it "beneath its dignity" to reply to the charges.

German - Israel Pact Signed:

Shown here is the signing of the final documents making of-
ficial the agreement concluded 'between the West German
Republic and the State of Israel which calls for payment by
Germany to Israel of $822,000,000 in compensation for Nazi
crimes against the Jews. The final act was concluded at the
United Nations legal department in New York. Seated are
ARTHUR LOURIE, Consul General for Israel, and Dr.
HANS RIESSER (right), German Consul General - in New
York, who signed for their respective countries. Standing-is

Uoited Nations legal departm ient.

In his reply, Dr. Katz-Suchy denounced Zionist organizations, the Joint Distribution
Committee and the Israel delegation at the United Nations. In the course of a long speech he
charged the United States with organizing and financing espionage activities in Poland.
The United States, always seeking "new paths and new people to replace agents already
compromised," had used for espionage purposes all possible organizations and associations ,
which, because of their .international character, had been able to penetrate the peoples' de-
mocracies, said Dr. Katz-Suchy. "The recent trial of traitors to the Czechoslovak n a ti on
, as well as other similar incidents, have exposed new channels of criminal activities of
in Prattle-
the American intelligence service," he went on.
They consisted of Zionist organizations, among them the most active being the American
Joint Distribution Committee. The loss of.this channel provoked a new campaign of lies and
-slanders against the countries of The popular democracies and against the Soviet Union. Those
slanders have as their aim to smokescreen a new defeat suffered by American intelligence. The
speech of the Israeli delegate belongs right in this campaign."

U. S. Britain, Canada Assail Anti-Semitism

question, he asserted. Perhaps Mr. Vishinsky would bring "new word from the Kremlin." rather
Sir Gladwyn Jebb, of Britain, pointed out that "one
horrible new phenomenon" is now evident not only in Czecho-
slovakia but also in other countries behind the Iron Curtain.
This, he said, is "the now undeniable oppression of Jews who
are being made scapegoats for the frightful conditions in the
Communist states."
What could the West do about "these manifestations of hate
and fear?" asked Sir Gladwyn. "Certainly it must not itself give
vent to hate and fear, or itself deny freedom of thought. And it
must not fail to provide for its own security. It should go on
making clear to the Communist governments that, in the -absence
of aggression on their part, they were not going to be attacked
by anybody. Perhaps in time this truth would dawn upon them."

I
For Banning Harlan s Film _

FRANKFURT, (JTA)—The distributors of the Viet Harlan
film; "The Immortal Beloved," filed a $436,00 10 damage suit against
the City of Frankfurt because Mayor Kolb banned showing of
the film produced and directed by the top Nazi in the Gertnan

machinery. Efforts to screen his films have led to riots and
demonstraticins in many West German cities. The suit was brought
by the Herzog Film Distributing Co.

ties in East. Germany immediately after the Nazi debacle have
been sold to cinema Operators in the Middle East countries.

HANOVER, (JTA)—The state of Lower Saxony has banned
as neo-Nazi a group known as the "German Community" and
has confiscated a large collection of Nazi and anti-Semitic litera-

after its predecessor organization, the Socialist Reich Party, had
been banned as a neo-Nazi group.
A 22-year-old German chauffeur has been sentenced in
Cologne to three months' imprisonment for stating, during a
restitution case involving a house acquired by the defendant's
family, that "all Jews should have been gassed and we. would not
now be pestered with the presence of Jewish scum." The sen-
