During Passover passengers and crew alike on all El Al aircraft, in the skies above a dozen countries on four con- tinents, will be eating tradition- al holiday fare, from matzos and wine to knaydlach and nuts. The Passover menu is on;y one of the many unusual prob- lems with which El Al has had to cope. Hitherto, El Al has flown two transatlantic flights a week, but this is being in- creased on April 19 to three per week. With any other line this would mean merely a technical revision of schedules. El Al faces a difficulty which con- fronts no other line—the ques- tion of flying on Saturday, the Jewish Sabbath. The third flight will take off on Friday afternoons before the Sabbath sets in, and will end on Saturday nights after the appearance of three stars, an arrangement which permits even the most devout to make the flight. An El Al flight has a way of engendering an atmosphere of what is known in Yiddish as "haymishkeit," a pervasive friendliness which is apparent within a few minutes after the plane takes off. An American' woman who flew an El Al plane . recently wrote to the airline thanking it for making her trip so comfortable. She added: "El Al is not the biggest or smallest or oldest or youngest airline in the world. But my flight convinced me that it is the happiest line flying." When an Israel citizen sees an El Al aircraft in the sky and says, "That's our plane," he is speaking the literal truth. 'The people . of Israel are a major partner in the company. Israel Airlines means just what it says. The line is the joint venture of the whole nation, represented by the registered owners : the government, the Jewish Agen- cy, the Zim Navigation Com- pany and the Histadrut. Again and again, El Al has stepped in—or rather flown in —to act as a Good Samaritan in an emergency. A few hours after the news reached Israel of the tidal wave and flood in Holland in February, an El Al Constellation was being load- ed with a mercy cargo of 10,000 items of clothing for the stricken Dutch, the gift of the Jewish Agency. , In August, 1951, an ama- teur radio operator in New p an S. 0. S. York picked ti from Portugal calling for vari- da,se, a rare drug needed for a little girl with polio. Within hours, an El Al Constellation was flying across the Atlantic with the precious life-saver. In 1952, an Israeli boy suffered a rare eye disease requiring surgery in Switzerland. That same day, El Al craft was flying him to the surgeon who could save his sight. In June, 1950, a group of Amer- ican students were stranded in Luxemburg by the outbreak of war in Korea. El Al flew them home, and did the same later in the year with a party of Amer- ican Catholic pilgrims in Rome for the Holy Year celebrations when they learned that their scheduled aircraft had been di- verted to Korea.
