The greatest events are still highlighted by the performances and the start of the 1953-54

abead for American-Jewish ath-
Jetts participating in sports dur-
ing 1953.

Cleveland Indians, Saul Rogo-
'Din with the Chicago White
Sox, Joe Ginsberg with Detroit,.
and Cal Abrams with Cincin-
nati. These are the stalwarts
who will command the spot-
light, barring the rapid de-
velopment of any rookies.

But baseball will have to share
some of the limelight with the
development of the U.S. teams
that will participate in Israel's
Maccabiah games Sept. 20-29.
Judging from the plans of the
U.S. Committee, which is spon-
soring the American team, the
publicity will be coming fast
and furious along about the end
of the summer.
The intention is not only to
end a team to Israel but the
competitive squad is also sched-
uled to be accompanied by some
of the leading Olympic stars who
captured championships at Hel-
sinki. They'll give exhibition
performances as a side attrac-
tion.
Those who make the actual
American team (the total should
number close to 80) will have an
exciting experience to look for-
ward to. It is three years since
the last Maccabiad in Israel,
and the athletes who took part
are still talking about their trip.

The thing that impressed
them most was the opportuni-
ty to meet athletes from many
different countries and get ac-
quainted with their ways in
sports. Many strong friend-
ships developed, and are due
to be renewed agafn in Sep-
tember. While there will be
new stars participating for
the first time, many of those
who thrilled the spectators in
the 1950 games will be back
once more trying for repeat
victories.

Football will be taking over
at about the time the Macca-
biad is over, and judging from
the number of underclassmen
active during the past season,
there will once again be nu-
merous Jewish athletes in uni-
form. A favorite, of course, will
be the Brandeis University
team. The squad, under the
guidance of coach Benny
Friedman, has been steadily
pushing ahead and 1953 may
be an important season in de-
termining its future. The con-
troversy over whether to play
on the Sabbath appears to
have died 'quietly and chanceS
are that Saturday football
games will once again be on
the calendar.

The situation in basketball
will be somewhat similar to foot-
ball. There were enough good
undergraduates on the nation's
college courts this past season
to indicate a repeat performance
in the 1953-54 campaign
