agreement with Finland on re-
newal of the Israeli - Finnish
trade agreement, and took steps
in still another direction, to
conclude negotiations with the
Palestine Electric Company
leading to extension of electric
power facilities in the country.
The agreement with the oil
company came after protracted
negotiations begun nearly five
years ago when the British Man-
date in Palestine was surren-
dered. It gives Israel the right
to refine its own crude oil as
well as to market its own crude
or refined petroleum products.
The company will also guaran-
tee 'Israel oil products for local
consumption. Its revenues will
be subject to Israeli fiscal regu-
lations. The agreement is sub-
ject to Parliamentary approval
in Jerusalem, further negotia-
tion in London on technical de-
tails and final signature in Lon-
don.

Strict Observation of
Barton's Products Means
Assured Pesach Kashrut

Years ago in Europe and in
the United States, when Pass-
over came, many food items in-
cluding candy were removed
from the home, since it was not
possible to eat them during the
Passover season.
Stephen Klein, president of
Barton's Bonbonniere, tells us
why Passover sweets were not
possible in the past. He explains
that the manufacture of raw in-
gredients was impossible to con-
trol, without a prohibitive
amount of time and effort. In
Europe, many of the ingredients
came from different countries
and there was no way of super-
vising the manufacturing of
those ingredients so that they
would be Kosher for Passover.
Klein, who always sought to
give glamor and interest to
Jewish holidays as well as to
American holidays, encountered
this difficulty of supervision.
But here in the U. S. it was pos-
sible to control production if an
organization wished to expend
the time and effort necessary.
Through a combination of ad-
vance planning, supervised pro-
duction of r a w materials, re-
search in developing ingredients
suitable for Passover production
and through technical advance-
ment, Barton's finally is now in
a position to produce not just
one, but a fascinating variety of
kosher for Passover confections.
It is significant that while
many of the items are prepared
for Jewish holidays, many non-
Jews have become interested in
and expressed respect for the
work that Barton's has been do-
ing.
Barton's bonbonniere pro-
duces all its products under the
supervision of the Union of Or-
thodox Jewish Congregations- of
America and its affiliate, the
Rabbinical Council, consisting of
560 Rabbis. Rabbis, representing
this U. S. and Canadian organ-
ization, supervise and endorse as
Kosher, every item produced at
the Barton factory.
