ISRAEL REDEMPTION MONTH

The State of Israel has been confronted recently with many
serious internal and external problems that portent grave
political developments.

It is most urgent that the economic defenses of tie State
of Israel be strengthened with the aid of positive action
by responsible Americans.

The State of Ierael has demonstrated the devotion to freedom
and human rights which the United States recognizes me
essential to the preservation of democracy throughout the
world.

The climax of this special Israel pond campaign will take

to the young nation in celebration of her fifth anniversary.

THEREFORE, I, G. Mennen Williams, Governor of the State of
Michigan, do hereby proclaim the period beginning March 20,
1953, and ending April 20, 1953, as

ISRAEL REDEMPTION MONTH

- in Michigan, and urge full support of that nation's efforts
to secure the necessary investment funds to ensure economic
independence.

on April 20 as "Israel Redemp-
tion Month," and called upon
all citizens of Michigan to join
in "full support of that nation's
(Israel's) efforts to secure the
necessary investment funds to
ensure economic independence."
Israel's Redemption - Month is
being marked in communities
throughout the United States by
an intensive campaign to obtain
cash purchases of Israel bonds.
In his proclamation, the Gov-
ernor noted the fact that "Israel
has demonstrated the devotion
to freedom and human rights
which the United States recog-
nizes as essential to the preser-
vation of democracy." He stress-
ed the importance of measures
designed to strengthen Israel's
economic defenses.
Chairman of "Israel Redemp-
tion Month" in Detroit is Sam-
uel Feldstein, a previous bond
.cash collection chairman and an
active member of the Zionist
Organization. Assisting him as
co-chairman in plans to !contact
Detroiters in the one-month
drive to speed investment dol-
lars to Israel by cash subscrip-

Town Hall Concert
Honors Harold Shapero

Harold Shapero, Brandeis Uni-
versity lecturer and young com-
poser of note, will be honored at
New York City's Town Hall
when Leonard 'Bernstein con-
ducts Shapero's "Symphony for
Classical Orchestra," the third
public presentation of the sym-
phony.
A member of the Brandeis
University creative arts school
faculty, Shapero wrote the sym-
phony in 1947 on a commission
by t h e Koussevitzky Founda-
tion. Bernstein first introduced
it in 1948 with the Boston Sym-
phony Orchestra, and it, later
was performed by the Cleveland
Orchestra.
The recipient of more honors
and prizes than any musician of
his generation, Shapero has
been awarded two Guggenheim
Fellowships, two Prix de Rome,
a Fulbright Fellowship, the
Gershwin Prize, the Paine
Travelling Fellowishp and the
Beams Prize.
His overture "The Travellers"
was commissioned and per-
formed by the Houston Sym-
phony Society in 1948. A vradu-
ate of Harvard University,
Shapero joined the faculty of
Brandeis in 1952.
