Norman Katkov does an ex-
cellent bit of reporting in "The
Fabulous Fanny: The Story of
Fanny Brice," a Knopf publi-
cation.
His approach
is unique. He
interviews some
of the great
personalities in
show business,
Fanny Brice's
two husbands
(Nicky Arnstein
and Billy Rose)
and refers to
Fanny's notes
which were in- Fanny Brice
tended for her autobiography
which she did not live to com-
plete. The result is a fine story
about a great show-woman-
perhaps the outstanding enter-
tainer of her day.
Katkov himself emerges as a
hero-worshiper, and he exerts
striking influence on his read-
ers. The views of Ida and Eddie
Cantor. of Trixie Wilson and
Polly Moran, of Ann Penning-
ton and George Cukor, and
many more—all her • associates
and friends; the reactions of
theatrical critics and play-
wrights serves to show the gen-
uine stagecraft as it was prac-
ticed by Fanny Brice.
There is an interesting quo-
tation—one of the few in the
book referring to her Jewish loy-
alties. She tells of her comment

to Billy Rose on his song "River-
side Rose":

"I told him that I never did
a Jewish song that would of-
fend the race, because it de-
pended on the race for the
laughs. In anything Jewish I
ever did, , I wasn't standing
apart, making fun of the race.
I WAS the race, and what
happened to me on the stage
is what could happen to them.
They identified with me, and
then it was all right to get a
laugh; because they were
laughing at me as much as at
themselves. It is the same with
any race, and it is something
I always knew from instinct:
There is good taste in humor
like there is good taste in
clothes or furniture. It is okay
for one Irishman to call an-
other Irishman anything, any
kind of name. But if you are
not an Irishman, keep the
mouth shut. The same with all
people."
"The Fabulous Fanny" is a

r

;

fabulous book about a fabulous
lady. No one who picks it up will
fail to finish it. And none will
fail to become a Fanny fan—
because she deserved the tribute.
Katkov's book is mainly report-
ing, quoting, but whichever way
he did the compiling of the
Brice facts, he did it well and
his book deserves the big sale
it is already enjoying.

SEDER TABLE SETTING
Through the centuries, -dates have been a favorite delicacy on
all festive occasions. At Passover particularly it is appropriate to
enjoy the ancient "fruit of kings" at its finest. Today, with their
increasing use in holiday baking, in salads and desserts and as a
wholesome, natural confection, there is a greater demand than
ever for choice dates for the Passover table. This demand is re-
flected in reports from grocers throughout the country that women
are including Dromedary Dates in their Passover orders. Drome-
dary Dates are available for the Passover holiday at grocers and
Ifood stores everywhere, in both 7 1/4 oz. and full pound packages.
