famous since 1884

This symbol has been selected
by the American Jewish Ter-
centenary Committee for tise
during the observance • in 1954
of t h e 300th anniversary of
Jewish settlement in the United
States, David Bernstein, execu-
tive director, announced. Espe-
cially designed for the forth-
coming commemoration by the
well-known artist, William Met-
zig, of New York City, the sym-
bol depicts a menorah in a stars
and stripes motif, which illus-
trates the freedom Jews have
found within t h e democratic
framework of the United States.

Metzig, designer of the sym-
bol, was born in Germany in
1893, and has acquired an inter-
national reputation as a special-
ist in the graphic arts. In Feb-
ruary, 1939, he took refuge from
Hitlerism and fled to the United
States.
