Labors Courageous Stand Against Anti-Semitism

It is . our contention that as long as there
are courageous Americans who speak up for
truth and who are ready to , challenge the
right of bigots to poison this country's .at
rnosphere, our American-. heritage Will be
safe.. •
We _take this opportunity to 'pay our re-.
spects to American labor for the courageous
stand 'it has taken in -opposition to anti-
Semitism, in defense of the just rights of
downtrodden - peoples and in support of Is- .
rael. Both the CIO and AFL have been con- ,
sistent backers of the Histadrut. They have
come forth with help to the Zionist cause
whenever. the movement was threatened.
They have pursued- a policy of aid to Israel

This week we are indebted to the De-
troit and Wayne County Federation of La-
bor. and to its dynamic* president, Frank X.
Martel, for a strong editorial protest in the
Detroit Labor News against the. recent out-
burst -of anti-Semitism before the Economic
Club. The Labor News editorial reads:.

this injustice can do no less to invite a spokes-
man for Israel to come and tell the real story
of Israel and its position in tire Near East
where it is beset by the menace not only of
the autocratic governments in the Arab na-
tions but non) by the Big`Bear from the North,
the common enemy of all civilization.

This expression of protest against anti-
Semitic utterances is a real contribution to
the American principle of fair play, and we
are :confident that the entire Jewish com-
munity and all right-thinking Americans will
join in commending Mr. Martel and his asso-
ciates for their firm stand against bigotry.

Lengyel Urges Transformation of
Middle East Into Productive Area

-

Dr. Emil Lengyel, the noted author and lecturer who is now
professor of "echication at New York University, has produCed a
most timely work with his "World Without End: The Middle East"
(publisher, John. Day Co., .62 W: -.45th, N. Y. 36).
This impressive work exposes the entire area under discUs-
siori to public view and is a challenge for careful consideration of
the problems posed in t h o s e lands. He describes the power
vacuum in that. area which incites to aggression, and calls for
genuine help by the west 'in order to eliminate the dangers that
stem from there. •
There is a thorough discussion in the Lengyel Volume of the
rise of the state•of Israel and the Zionist background which led to
the rebirth • of the Jewish nation. He makes this interesting Corn-
pa•ison between the Arabs and Israel:
"The bulk of the region—most of the Arab countries and
Iran—is part of the global poorhouse in which live two-thirds
of mankind. Conditions . in Turkey are somewhat better, while
the standards of Israel are on a par with those of Central
Eur
• \-
l:e. "
Dr. Lengyel
yel rejects the idea that this "poorhouse. of the
world" is doomed to a permanent status of degradation. He points
out:
At an international syMposium held in Jerusalem in 1952,
it was shown that 800 millions of acres of accessible deserts
throuohout the world could' .be economically 'irrigated and pro-
duce more crops than naturally watered areas now under cul-
tivation. Many of these deserts are in the Middle East. The
poorhouse of the world need not be a floorhouse."

The ex-Mufti is exposed by. Dr. Lengyel as the man "who
concocted the hideous plot to slaughter all the Jews. the Nazis
Could find."
The anti-Jewish attitudes of the Arab 'states are described
in detail, and Israel's home-building is viewed as the creation
of "a small slice of the West in the East"—thus creating both a
problem and an opportunity. Naturally, he develops also the
issues that were created by thipower of oil as a force for political
influence by Arab leaders.

Perhaps the most important evaluation iii the entire Lengyel
book is his analysis of Soviet policy in Palestine. Tracing the re-
cord to the traditional Communist opposition to Zionism, Dr.
Lengyel. shows how the Kremlin's anti-Zionism was turned into
political cash to "gain the gratitude of the Arab world." Then
came the about-face in favor of partition and a Jewish state, at
the United Nations. He explains: "Possibly the Kremlin thought
that what the British did- not like must be good for the Soviets—
or that Israel would be less hostile than the Arabs—or that the
creation of Israel would introduce a disturbing element into the
Middle East—or that the Soviets could more easily obtain custody
over Greek Orthodox property in the Israeli Holy Land than in.
an Arab country."
He leads up to the Prague. "treason trial" of 1952 when "a
strongly an ti-Israeli and even • anti-Semitic line was revealed"
and adds: "Devious, indeed, are the ways of Kremlin policy. Per-
haps the Soviets wanted to make up with the Arabs."'
Dr. Lengyel's "World Without End" is a v e r Y realistic
book about the Middle East. Students of the exisiting situation
will find it most enlightening and most valuable for an under-
standing of the present world, crisis.
