Former Detroiter Nathan Hack
Is Familiar Name to Amputee Vets

"American by Choice — by
Hack" is the title of an article
which first appeared in VFW
Magazine.. and has been con-
densed for this month's issue of
Reader's Digest.
Its principal is former De-
troiter Nathan Hack, who moved
to California after his retire-
ment in 1-945. The article points
out that if not for a case of bad
feet, Hack might never have
manufactured the or t hop edic
shoes which . have made his
name fathous froth coast to
coast.
Hack came to the United
States in 1908 to escape from re-
ligious persecution in Russian-
ruled Poland. • Shortly afterward
he married and opened up a
shoe store in Detroit.
Both he and his wife. had bad
feet, and Hack decided to study
the structure of the foot in me-
dical books', and finally .designed
a shoe. that was comfortable fcir
them both.
His original store was located:
at Hastings a n d Farnsworth
Streets from 1916 to 1926 when
he moved to the downtown lo-

cation the firm still occupies. He
called his original establishment
"The Shoe Store on the Corner
which Does Busines s on the
Square," aaid signed his- adver-
tisements "by Hack," which now
is his trade mark.
Hack's orthopedic shoes im-
mediately caught on, and he be-
came a successful merchant.
The most interesting part of
his story was to come, however,
after his retirement. With his
sons, Morton and Leonard Hack,
assuming management of the
three Detroit stores, Nathan
Hack moved to Santa Monica,
Calif. •
This was after World War II,
and Hack immediately came out
of retirement to give a hand
to veterans, who lost legs in the
war. He designed a framed
walker, much superior • to the
one already used, to gain the
confidence of the man in their
ability to walk again.
He also designed the now-
famous convalescent boot, which
Is used in military hospitals and
in many large industrial plants.
NoW he is working 'on a "ripple-
sole" shoe, which when perfected
will lighten the load of people
who are their feet all,day.
Besides his visits to veterans
hospitals, Hack is active in his
local Bnai Brith lodge, and edits
the group's newspaper.
