Suburban Temple to Erect Monument
To Jewry in Southern Oakland County
Above is the architect's sketch of the proposed
$450,000 structure of Suburban Temple, to he
erected on 10 Mile Rd., between Coolidge and
Greenfield in South Oakland County. The
temple will be built on 15 acres of land, and will
provide for a sanctuary, social hall, administra-
tive offices and parking, according to Montgom-
ery Ferar, architect.
Dr. Hertz to Assume
Beth El Post March 29
Dr. Richard C. Hertz, newly
elected senior ratbi of Tem-
ple Beth El, will assume his
duties with the Temple on
March 29.
He will conduct the annual
congregational Passover seder
at the Temple on March 31.
Rabbi Hertz will be install-
ed at the Friday evening ser-
vices on April 3.

Panel for Americans, a group
of four Wayne University stu-
dents, will participate in a pro-
gram of the Young Marrieds
Group of Temple Israel at 8:30
p.m., Tuesday, in the Temple
youth hail.
The quartet of speakers fea-
tures a Catholic, Protestant, Ne-
gro and Jew, each of whom will
present his particular belief and
answer audience questions on
various phases of his creed.
Dan Arnold is chairman for
the evening, which will be fol-
lowed by a business meeting and
social. Mrs. Pat Wolrauch is in
charge of the social.
Interested couples, provided
one of the spouses is under the
age of 35, are invited to attend.
At the invitation of Rabbi
Leon Fram, the Men's Club of
Temple Israel will conduct a
laymen's service at 8:30 p.m.,
today. Harry I. Pliskow, past
president, will deliver the ser-
mon on "War on Indifference."
The lay readers at the service
will be Andrew H. Gantz, Dore
Novitz, Arthur Weber, Sam Suss-
man, Max Klarin, Harry Singer,
Benjamin Bagdade, Ellsworth R. I
Roston and Nathan Kolb.
Cantor Robert S. Tulman and
the Sisterhood choral group, di-
rected by Karl Haas, Will render
sabbath music. Reuben Levine
is president of the Men's Club,
and Hyman Jackson is organizer
of the laymen's service, which
will be followed by a social hour.
Reform Judaism to Fete
Its 80th Anniversary

pected when leaders of Reform
Judaism gather in New York,
April 19 to 23 for the 42nd bien-
nial assembly of the Union of
American Hebrew Congrega-
tions, which this year marks its
80th anniversary.
Among the founding congre-
gations of the UAHC was De-
troit's Temple Beth El, which
participated in its inaugural
meeting in Cincinnati on July 8,
1873.
At that time, delegates from
34 congregations attended, in-
cluding Beth El's Magnus Butzel,
father of Justice Henry Butzel
and the late Fred M. Butzel;
Simon Heavenrich, father of
Mrs. Hortense Lambert, whose
late husband, Benjamin` L.
Lambert was a congregation
president; and David J. Work-
urn, who moved to Cincinnati
shortly after the UAHC was
formed.
The Union of American He-
brew Congregations today counts
in its membership 450 Reform
congregations in t h e United
States, with a total of 125,000
families and 500,000 individuals.
