Pamphlet Describes
Morocco Jews' Tragedy

The 200,000 Jews of French
Morocco are among the most
poverty-stricken groups in the
world, according to a new 42-
page printed booklet just issued
by the American Jewish Corn-
mittee. The brochure, entitled,
"The Social and Legal Status of
the Jews of French Morocco,"
was written by Andre Choura-
qui, noted author, legal scholar
and leader in French Jewish
communal activities. In World
War II, during the occupation
of France by the Nazis, Mr.
Chouraqui was a leader of the
Restistance movement in cen-
tral France.
Thet Jewi- of French Morocco,
writes Mr. Chouraqui, "are at
the bottom of the social, politic-
al and economic ladder." Liv-
ing amidst a predominantly
Moslem population, under a
Mohammedan Sultan, Jews for
centuries suffered from harsh
economic, social and legal dis-
crimination. With the coming of
the French protectoratein 1912,
the situation of Jews has im-
proved although as non-Mos-
lems, they still suffer from many
of the old disabilities. They may
not hold positions of authority
in the government. They are
subject to discrimination in jus-
tice. A Jew accused of defaming
the religion of Islam, for ex-
ample, can never prove his in-
nocence because in Islamic
courts the oath of a Jew has ne
legal standing.

,- •
mariners, Renegades and
Castaways,' James' Plea
For Admission to U.S.

C.L.R. James, who is married
to an American citizen and has
a native American son, is being
detained on Ellis Island and
kept from becoming an Ameri-
can _resident. He desires to be
a U.S. citizen, and as part of
his plea for admission, he has,.
written "Mariners, Renegades
and Castagvays." He is distrib-
uting it personally from 1186
Broadway, New York 1, N.Y.
The book is a study of Her-
man Melville and his novel,.
"Moby Dick." It is a compari-
son of fiction and reality, an
evaluation of the fight against
totalitarianism - 100 years ago
and now, and contains an at-
tack on the McCarran Act.
James came from the West
Indies to England in 1932. He
became a Trotzkyite, but avows
opposition to Communism.
His book is a plea for justice :,
an attack on dictatorship and a
passionate appeal in his t5wn
defense for the right to become
an American.
