The eminent actor, Ed Robinson, who currently is making
a baseball film in Melbourne, Fla., expressed a desire to inakf .,
the appeal for bonds at the Miami Beach gathering and wax's
given a rousing welcome by the audience that was deeply moved'
by his serious report. Mr. Robinson, whom Governor McKeldrin
made an honorary citizen of Maryland at the Sunday meeting,
declared that "if certain nations behind the Iron Curtain would
adopt baseball instead of hot and cold wars, we would be certain
that our children would not wear any other uniform than base-
ball's. Mr. Robinson declared:
"If we allow Israel to fail, and it can fail without our help„
we shall go down with it. We may as well make up our minds
here and now that our fate here in America is inseparably linked
with the destiny of Israel. That is why you and I must never
turn our backs on Israel." •
The appeal for bond pufthases was made by Samuel Roth-
berg of Peoria, Ill., national chairman for special bond sales, who
announced that approximately 500,000 Americans had subscribed
$150,000,000 to the Israel bond issue.
Henry Montor, executive vice-president of the Israel bond
organization, presided at the meeting and asserted that "there
is only one compulsion in bond purchasing—the pressure of your
own conscience."
Mr. Montor made known .a decision to hold a national lead•,.
ership conference at the Mayflower Hotel, Washington, March
6 to 8. Speakers at the conference will include Senator Robert
Taft, Senator Herbert H. Lehman, Dr. Dov Joseph, Israel's Min-,
ister of State; Arieh Leon Kubovy, former Israel Minister to
Poland and Czechoslovakia; Theodore Kolek, of the Israel Min-,
istry; Dr. Nelson Glueck, preSident of Hebrew Union College.;
Jewish Institute of Religion; Henry Morgenthau, chairman - (4
the boa:::::ie bond organization, and Israel Ambassador Abba
