LITERALLY "ONE FOR the
book" is the Golden Book Din-
ner being readied for March 15
by the Gold Star Parents of the
Jewish War Veterans. . • This
fine organization is composed of
the parents of Michigan's Jew-
ish GI's who were casualties of
World War II and of the Ko-
rean campaign. . The photo-
graphs and biographies of these
lads have been assembled . . .
and will be incorporated into
an impressive memorial volume
to be called the Golden Book ...
which will. be on permanent
display at the JWV Memorial
Home on Davison. . . The March
15 affair is planned to spur this
project to completion . . . and
to reveal plans also for an addi-
tional community memorial to
the devotion and gallantry of
those whose "gift was life and
whose legacy is freedom."

WHILE PERT-LOOKING Syl-
via Brilliant was appearing
with others on the TV program
"Ladies Day" a customer called
husband, Joe, at Briliant Music
Co., and asked if he was watch-
ing his wife. . "I've got all 25
sets on," replied Joe, "and none
of them make her look any
better!" .

SIMON - SEGAL, the American
Jewish Committee's expert on
foreign affairs, addressed a re-
cent Labor Zionist program and
told the story of the visitor to
a Soviet art gallery who asked
the identity of the individual
who was the subject of a large
canvas. . . "That," explained
the guide, "is Murieoff, who in-
vented the - incandescent bulb,
the talking machine, the wheel,
the telephone and telegraph."
• . Continuing, the guide then
pointed to a much smaller can-
_ vas, "And that," he concluded
"is Zurieoff
. he invented
Murieoff!"

AT THE DETROIT'S ADA's
Roosevelt Day Dinner, Arthur
Schlesinger, Jr., who traveled
with Gov. Adlai Stevenson dur-
ing the recent presidential cam-
paign, told of the woman in
San Francisco who forced her
way through a welcoming crowd
to shake the Governor's hand.
• . Later in the day, in a huff :
she called the candidate's head-
quarters to demand the return
of the diamond ring she claim-
ed she had lost in the process.

SELMA AXELROD was telling
her three children of her long
yearned for and extreme desire
to be on the stage. .. The old-
est child, Risa, 10, said, "No,
mommy, we want you home for
dinner."

WE ARE GLAD TO relate that
finally, after so much discus-
sion and arguing pro and con,
an association of kosher cater-
ers in Detroit has been organ-
ized ., and the caterers are
all for it . . . plus the orthodox
rabbis in our town. . . Sam
Klein of Bel-Aire is the group's
first president.

fronted recently by an impor-
tunate youth who demanded,
"that book you talked me into
borrowing three weeks ago." .. .
Irv's gratified librarian friend
asked, "Was it so good you want
to read it over again?" . . .
"Heck, no," said the bookworm.
"I wrote my new girl's phone
number in it."

ALSO IN THE mail box was
the letter from Max Glenner,.
now an assistant technical ad-
visor at Twentieth Century-
Fox in Beverly Hills
Writes Max, the story getting
the biggest laugh in movie cir-
cles is about the casting man-
ager _of a studio in financial
straits who reported, "That big-
shot you told me to get wants a
thousand bucks to play an In-
dian for two days." . . The
head of the studio chewed an-
grily on his cigar and bellowed,
"Give him five hundred and
have him play a half-breed!"

Brazil's Anti-Semitic Press
Attacks Cabinet Member

RIO DE JANEIRO, ( J T A ) —
Anti-Semitic newspapers in Bra-
zil have started a campaign
against Horacia Lafer, the only
Jewish member of the Brazilian
Cabinet, who holds the 'post of
Minister of Finance.
The anti-Jewish press- empha-
sizes his Jewishness by calling
him "Rabbi Lafer." Sr. Lafer,
whose parents immigrated to
Brazil about 60 years ago from
Lithuania, was born in Brazil.
President Vargas named him
Minister of Finance two years
ago. Earlier, he was chairman of
the finance committee of the
Brazilian Senate.
