Hello Boys and Girls:
I think we are lucky to live
in a land where there are many
happy occasions for celebration.
One of them is here now—Broth-
erhood Week for 1953. This is a
time for meeting with people
who may live differently than!
we do - or who may look differ-
ently than we do—to get to
know them and to understand
them, to form friendships that
last, not just for one week, but
for always. Here is how our
friends, Danny and Judy, cele-
brated Brotherhood Week . . .
* * *
The Little Girls' Prayers
"Of course," Mother said to
Mrs. Smith. "We would be happy
to have Patty and Jimmy spend
the weekend with us while you
visit your family upstate. Pack
their things and send them over
right away."
Danny and Judy were so ex-
cited! Their good friends, next-
door neighbors, to live - with
them in their own home for
three whole days! What a treat!
The children played hard all
day. It was Friday, and when
they sat down to dinner Jimmy
said "Is it a party?" as he look-
ed at the bright white cloth, the
shining candlesticks, the silver
Kiddush cups.
"No." said Danny, "just Sab-
bath Eve dinner, like we have
every week."
"But I thought your Sabbath
came on Saturday," Jimmy said.
Daddy explained about all Jew-
ish festivals beginning at sun-
down the evening before.
Soon after enjoying their Sab-
bath meal, the children were
ready for bed. In the girls' room,
Judy slid under the covers.
"Aren't you going to say your
prayers?" asked Patty.
"Sure," said Judy, folding her
hands. "Mother will come in
right away and hear me."
Patty stood silently on the rug
until Mother came into the
room. "How' can Judy say her
prayers when she's already in
bed?" Patty wanted to know.
"Doesn't she have to get down
on her knees?"
Mother smiled. "That is your
way of- saying yotir night pray-.
ers," she said, "but Jewish peo-
ple do not kneel. Suppose you
listen to Judy first."
And Judy recited. "In peace,
0 God, I shut my eyes; In peace
again I hope to rise . . ." ending
with "Shema Yisroel . • ."
"Now your turn, Patty," Moth-
er said. "Do it just as you would
in, your own home."
So Patty knelt at the side of
the other twin bed, folded her
hands, closed her eyes, and
prayed, "Now I lay me down to
sleep; I pray the Lord my soul
to keep . . " When she was
finished she climbed into bed.
"Do you _really think it was all
right to say my kind of prayer
here?" she asked timidly.
."Certainly," Mother assured
her. "God hears the prayers of
all children, ' no matter where
they say them, or in what

words. Now sleep well. Good
night."
And the two little girls, Jew-
ish Judy and Christian Patty,
slept side by side, watched over
by One loving God.
