Stories for

Our Boys

and Girls

An

American Jewish Press Feature

Hello Boys and Girls:
"A people who lives—sings; a
people who sings -- lives!" A
Jewish sage named Eliezer ben
Yehudah said this, expressing
the meaning of music to the
Jewish people.
Because music has always
played such an important role
in Jewish life—in hard times,
as well as on happy occasions—
we Jews of America have set
aside a period each year of em-
phasis on Jewish music. -
This year, • the ninth annual
Jewish music festival is beirtg
observed from January 31 to
March 1. Every city, every syn-
agogue, every organization will
have at least one prograth dem=
onstrating different types of
particularly Jewish music, as
well as general music by Jewish
composers. There will be syna-
gogue music, folk songs, ancient
chants, modern Israeli composi-
tions, lullabies, marches, love
songs, children's music.
Perhaps you'd like to have a
little Jewish Music Festival of
your own, in your _Hebrew or
religious school class or at home
with your friends. You can sing
Jewish songs, perform Jewish
dances, play Jewish records, or,
if you play an instrument, learn
a Jewish piece this month. En-
joy yourselves!

"Art Thou a Jew?"

It may seem strange to you,
but there are people who have
never known any Jews. And, not
having seen a Jew, they have
some fantastic ideas about how
"different" a Jewish person
must be from themselves. Here
is a - little story about someone
who learned better . . .
The first Jewish pioneer to
come to the Ohio Valley was
Joseph Jonas. Joseph came to
this country from England after
hearing many tales about the
beautiful Ohio Valley. Friends
in England tried to dissuade
him from settling in the ."wilds
of America." But Joseph Jonas
Made the trip,. -and - in 1817 ar-
rived in what is no' known as
Cincinnati.
The news of the Jewish set-
tler spread far and wide. Fron-
tiersmen came from miles
around to have a look at the
first Jew they had ever seen.
The newcomer found himself
the center of curiosity.
Said an old Quakeress, "Art
thou a Jew? Thou art one of
God's chosen people. Wilt thou
let me examine thee?" .
And the Quakeress, after
turning Joseph round anthround
exclaimed, "Well, thou art no
different_ from other people."

"The Face I Love"

This week in public school,
boys and girls, you will be talk-
ing about a great American
whose 'birthday is celebrated as
a national holiday. You know
who—Abraham - Lincoln. Here is
a beautiful poem about Lincoln,
written by a well-known Jewish
author, Rufus Learsi.

"Eyes of the Face I Love"*

Oh, Lincoln, sweet and mighty soul,
Patient, brave and wise.
What light is this that shines on us
From out your gentle eyes?

is a holy light, I know,
A gift by God's decree
For him who strikes men's fetters down
And makes the bondman free!

It

For him who sets a people free.
Like Moses. sent by -God,
To smite the House of Bondage
With his wonder-working rod.

Who led the slaves of Egypt out
To freedom and new life.
Like you, abiding meek but firm
In peril or in strife.

And when he. brought the Word of God
From Sinai's craggy height;
Behold, his face was like the sun!
It shone with beams of light!

And that must be the holy light,
The light from God above.
That shines in Lincoln's tender eyes,
Eyes of the face I love.
