Building Israel Economy Urged as Answer to Arab and Soviet Threats

An appeal to American Jewry
to back Israel in its economic
development, to help the new
democracy to cope with the dual
threat of renewed Arab hostility
and the Soviet campaign against
Jews was issued at a meeting of
the executive committee and
board of Governors of the Israel
bond organization, in New York.
Julian B. Venezky, chairman
of the executive committee, re-
ported that a total of $154,500,-
000 in Israel bonds had been
subscribed by approximately
500.000 Americans since the Is-
rael Independence Bond Issue
was launched in May 1951 to
further the economic independ-
ence of the country through the
establishment of new industries,
the development of agriculture,
the construction of new harbors
and railways, the building of
new roads and the exploitation
of mineral resources.
Referring to recent develop-
ments on the world scene, Ehud
Avriel, Director General of the
Ministry of Finance of Israel
and Israel's first Minister to
Czechoslovakia, who was the
principal speaker, said :
"At the present time when Is-
rael is confronted, on the one
hand, with an increased arma-
ment program on the part of
Arab neighbors who have re-
fused to enter into negotiations
with us for peace and, on the
other. with a systematic propa-
ganda campaign against Jews
and the State of Israel on the
part of Soviet Russia and its
satellites, the Israel Bond Issue
becomes an instrument of major
importance in preserving our in-
dependence and our democratic
way of life. Only through a
sound, strong economy can we
maintain our position as a free
democratic nation."

Harold U. Ribalow, son of the
editor of the Hebrew Hadoar,
Menahem Ribalow, himself an
able Hebrew scholar, has gained
fame as a book reviewer and as
a compiler of short stories. But
the hobby for which he has be-
come noted is his collection of The Nov.-Dec. 1952 issue of
sports data. He is the author of Journal for Physical and Men-

Mr. AVriel stated that the Is-
rael bond campaign in the
United States was responsible
for the following major steps of
economic progress during the
past two years:

"1. The program for the increase in
electric power and the expansion of
industry.
"2.
The exploitation of the mineral
resources of the Negev, including the
mining of copper and phosphates.
"3. The building of new roads, notably
the road that was recently completed
linking S'dom on the Dead Sea with
Beersheba, and thereby making possible
the resumption of the exploitation of
potash at the Dead Sea.
"4.
The development of new irriga-
tion projects to increase the area under
cultivation for the production of food."'

the executive committee; Sam-
uel Rothberg, national chairman
for special sales.
The statement of policy adopt-
ed at the meeting pointed out
that "the systematic distortion
by the countries in the Russian
orbit of the aims and achieve-
ments of Israel is not only an
affront to Israel, but a calumny
upon the motives and purposes
of the Jews of America." In its
appeal for widespread response,
the statement said:

"1. We urge that every Jew regard
it as his sacred obligation, to America
and to Israel. to 'purchase Israel bonds
in 1953, in united demonstration to the
world of our determination to help Israel
succeed economically.

"2. We urge upon every Jewish or-
ganization, whose expression of support
made possible the launching of the Israel
Bond Issue, to make the sale of Israel
Bonds a vital part of its organizational
program in '1953 and to call upon all of
its members to sell and to purchase
Israel Bonds in the maximum amount
possible within their economic resources.
"3. We urge upon every Jewish com-
munity in the United States to regard
it as an act of indispensable service to
American Jewry and to world Jewry in
1953 to sustain the economy of Israel
through the most efficient organization
of an Israel Bond campaign, with every
responsible member of the community
being called upon to play his share in
this enterprise of Jewish statesmanship.
"4.
We. call upon all Americans to
strengthen our friend and ally. the Slate
of Israel. by investing in her economy,
by showing faith in her capacity and
integrity, by giving her the resources
to play the great part of which she is
capable as a free democracy in a world
threatened by aggression."

Israel bond campaign for 1953
