Brands Walter 'Biased'

The Michigan Committee on
Immigration expressed its
shocked reaction to the remarks
made on the floor of the U.S.
House of Representatives by
Rep. Francis E. Walter (D) of
Pennsylvania, co-author of the
controversial • McCarran - Walter
Immigration Act.
The Michigan Committee, in
a statement signed by Rev.
Harry Wolf, chairman, and B.
M. Joffe, chairman of its ex-
ecutive committee, pointed out
that the testimony against the
McCarran-Walter Act was given
by representatives of Cardinal
Mooney of the Roman Catholic
Archdiocese, Bishop Emrich of
the Episcopal Diocese and by
several representatives of other
Protestant denominations.
"It is utterly un-American,"
said Rev. Wolf and Mr. Joffe,
"for Rep. Walter to use the sin-
ister scapegoat technique cur-
rently in vogue in Moscow and
in Czechoslovakia to divert the
public's sentiments from t h e
racist and unfair provisions of
the McCarran-Walter Act, so
properly denounced by both
candidates in the recent elec-
tion, General Eisenhower and
Governor Stevenson."
