I reared myself a monument,
Not built by hands of flesh and

In granite, marble or in bronze—
Nay! by the spirit it was

wrought.
A monument of Melody
Entoned on muse's vibrant lyre,
Infused by Hope and Love and
Faith,
And not by threatening steel
and fire.
The chord uplifts, the sword but
kills,
Yet Words in mellow rhythm
implore:
"Oh cast aside your hostile
spears,
Let Justice open wide its door,
And prove to you - that Peace
shall reign
Like dew distilled on parched
sward,
And men as brothers shall em-
brace
Before the Altar of the Lord."

intensive program for the Union,
that would seek to foster a com-
munity of interest among con-
stituent congregations. He spoke
often and frankly for construc-
tive interpretation of Jewish
law so that a mode of Jewish
life might evolve along Con-
servative lines.
He was active among the
youth organizations of the coun-
try, being vitally interested in
Young Judaea, the intercolle-
giate Zionist organization, the
Menorah movement. He even
helped to found Young Israel.
When the Civil War in Russia,
with the rampant pogroms
broke out, Friedlaender instantly
volunteered his services to go
abroad on a relief mission. His
wish was granted. On July 5,
1920, he was murdered by ban-
dits in the Ukraine. A very great
mind and soul in Israel per- 8
ished!

DR. ISRAEL FRIEDLAENDER
tern of a distinguished scholar
who, at the same time, was a
masterful man of action. He
combined the meticulous exact-
ness to detail of the true scholar
with the necessary attributes of
leadership, teaching men to un-
derstand and to pursue his pro-
gram.
He shared in the struggles
that aimed to fashion a demo-
cratic Jewish community in this
country, based on the totality of
Judaism embracing every phase
of Jewish culture: "religion plus
nationalism, disapora plus Pal-
estine."
Israel Friedlaender was born
in Russian Poland, in 1876. At
the age of 18, he left his native
land to study for the rabbinate
at the Hildesheimer Seminary in
Berlin. Soon he abandoned his
rabbinic plans and devoted him-
self to Semitics. He received his
doctorate at _ the University of
Strassburg, and was appointed
lecturer.
By the time he departed for
America he was acknowledged
as the intellectual leader of
Jewish students in Germany.
Coming here in 1903, Israel
Friedlaender joined the faculty
of the Seminary as professor of
Biblical literature.
At 27 he had already earned a
reputation as a scholar and pop-
ular pedagogue with .excellent
experience as a publicist and in-
terpreter of Jewish affairs. In
this country his influence and
activity extended quickly to
every sphere of Jewish life, aca-
demic and intellectual, cultural
and political. Thereupon he be-
came one of the recognized in-
tellectual figures in the Jewish
community.
His principal thesis assumed
that the Jewish problem in the
Diaspora was not physical sur-
vival, but Judaism, the cultural
and spiritual rebirth of theJew-
ish civilization on American soil.
He argued that the religionists
(Reform Jews) and the nation-
alists can live together in har-
mony in one community; their
common enemy is assimilation,
the disappearance of the Jewish
way of life.
He was a fervant Zionist; but
in accord with his general con-
viction he was a cultural Zionist.
In his innumerable lectures on
Zionism he stressed this aspect
of the Zionist movement. He
advocated a cultural center in
Palestine, even after the Balfour
Declaration, that would radiate
creative H e b r e w ideals and
values to sustain the Diaspora
and to enrich limn= civiliza-
tion.
In - the Jewish Congress con-
troversy he had a leading role
in the efforts to create concilia-
tion and unity between the
Zionists and non-Zionists. How-
ever, when all mediation efforts
failed, he took his stand boldly
with the Zionists. He was elected
the delegate of the United Syna-
gogue to the CongreSs session.
In the organization of the
United Synagogue, he served on
both the propaganda and educa-
tion committees and was among

those men who advocated an
