Two Aged Jews Arrive in Israel From Russia HAIFA, (JTA)—Two Jewish septagenarians who had directed a personal plea to President Slavernik of the Soviet Union for permission to leave Russia and join their children in Israel, ar- rived here aboard the liner Artza from Constanza. Both carried Soviet passports. Mrs. Sophia Srebenik, 73, and Chaim Leib Orenstein, 77, had made their applications for exit permits to the President's office months ago, but no action was taken until the requested per- mits were forthcoming a few weeks ago. Mrs. Srebenik was required to furnish proof that she would be allowed to enter Yeshiva. The col- lection, handsomely moroccan- bound, was presented by its owner, Burnet Hershey, veteran foreign correspondent (right) as a memorial to his father, Joseph, to Dr. Samuel Belkin, president of Yeshiva University. "At the heart of the ancient Hebrew idea of history," he de- clared, "is the assurance that Israel is God's chosen people. But Israel is the center of . his- tory not by origin but by elec- tion, and that means not merely privilege but obligation." The Rev, Millar Burrows, Win- kley Professor of Biblical Theo- logy and chairman of Yale's de- partment of Near Eastern lan- guages and- literature, described the early Israelites' conception of history in the fourth of a series of eight Trumbull lectures on the subject of "The Idea of History in the Ancient Near East." •aysisaini iagrodient for comp "The basic, distinctive pre- plate *kin protoctioa. supposition of all ancient 'He- brew ideas about history," Prof. Burrows asserted, "is the convic- tion that in human history the one, living God is working out His own sovereign purpose for the good of His creatures—first of all for His chosen people, but also. through them, for the rest of mankind," W•Oof• 4r11 4 `,13," . 4 41411 Pate )!-;.f4 D6v13on) 4904) East McNichols DETROIT 12 MEM= ME (Near Nine Mile and John R) 22711 Stephenson Highway HAZEL PARK . ■ NORTH DETROIT OFFICE u HAZEL PARK OFFICE Your skin deserves sure proteo tion ... guard it with Cheransy Skin Balm, an unusual prepara- tiotti which combines the rich- Ile SS of a cream with the non. stickiness of a lotion.
