Two Aged Jews Arrive in Israel From Russia
HAIFA, (JTA)—Two Jewish
septagenarians who had directed
a personal plea to President
Slavernik of the Soviet Union for
permission to leave Russia and
join their children in Israel, ar-
rived here aboard the liner Artza
from Constanza. Both carried
Soviet passports.
Mrs. Sophia Srebenik, 73, and
Chaim Leib Orenstein, 77, had
made their applications for exit
permits to the President's office
months ago, but no action was
taken until the requested per-
mits were forthcoming a few
weeks ago. Mrs. Srebenik was
required to furnish proof that
she would be allowed to enter
Yeshiva. University won out
over such competition as Yale,
Princeton, Johns Hopkins, the
New York Public Library, and
other noted schools and libra-
ries, in acquiring the valuable
Hershey Collection of Versailles
Conference Papers containing
5,090 documents which fill exist-
ing• gaps in the documentary
history of that subject. The col-
lection, handsomely moroccan-
bound, was presented by its
owner, Burnet Hershey, veteran
foreign correspondent (right) as
a memorial to his father, Joseph,
to Dr. Samuel Belkin, president
of Yeshiva University.
Israel. The Israel Embassy fur-
nished the necessary documents
and the two were permitted to
leave the Soviet Union without
further difficulty. Both arrivals
have families in this country
whom they have not seen in
more than 20 years.

Yale Theologian Backs
Old Testament Thought
NEW HAVEN, Conn.—A noted
Yale theologian said the Old
Testament carries no "dogma of
racial superiority."
"At the heart of the ancient
Hebrew idea of history," he de-
clared, "is the assurance that
Israel is God's chosen people.
But Israel is the center of . his-
tory not by origin but by elec-
tion, and that means not merely
privilege but obligation."
The Rev, Millar Burrows, Win-
kley Professor of Biblical Theo-
logy and chairman of Yale's de-
partment of Near Eastern lan-
guages and- literature, described
the early Israelites' conception
of history in the fourth of a
series of eight Trumbull lectures
on the subject of "The Idea of
History in the Ancient Near
East."
•aysisaini iagrodient for comp
"The basic, distinctive pre-
plate *kin protoctioa.
supposition of all ancient 'He-
brew ideas about history," Prof.
Burrows asserted, "is the convic-
tion that in human history the
one, living God is working out
His own sovereign purpose for
the good of His creatures—first
of all for His chosen people, but
also. through them, for the rest
of mankind,"
