ADL Exposes Bigot Jesse B. -Stoner and His Christian Anti-Jewish Party

The Christian Anti - Jewish
party, which has been flooding
the mails in recent months with
a barrage of vicious anti-Semitic
propaganda, is the brainchild of
a 28-year-old professional bigot,
Jesse B. Stoner, the Anti-
Defamation League of Bnai
Brith reported.
Stoner, the League's files show,
has been spasmodically active in
the hate movement for over a
decade. In 1942, he started his
"career" as "Kleagle" of the
Chattanooga, Tenn., Klan and
not long afterwards began cir-
culating outrageous petitions
and resolutions describing Jews
as "the children of the devil"
who "constitute a grave menace
to the United States." In Ston-
er's eyes, even Hitler had been
too moderate. The Chattanooga
bigot had a stamp marked
"Down With the Jews" which
he used on all his correspond
ence and in 1946, he announced
that he was planning a third
political party which, in essence,
would "make being a Jew pun-
ishable by death." Subsequently,
he formed The Stoner Anti-
Jewish Party and mailed out
anti-Semitic postcards to all
parts of the country _together
with applications for member-
ship and requests for funds.
The Anti-Defamation League
requested the Justice Depart-
ment to investigate Stoner's
mailings on the grounds that his
material violated a Federal law
against inciting to riot and mur-
der. But because of the compli-
cated civil liberties issues in-
volved, the Federal authorities
never did undertake to prosecute
him .
In 1948, Stoner's Anti-Jewish
Party nominated Stoner, himself,
to run for the U.S. House of
Representatives from the Third
District of Tennessee. He receiv-
ed 541 votes out of 30,000 cast,
and after his defeat-dropped out
of sight for a while. But last
summer, the former Klansman

.

turned up in Atlanta, where he
immediately began hobnobbing
with such local anti-Semites as
Homer Looniis, Emory Burke and
other 'remnants of the • defunct
nazi-like "Columbians." •
Shortly after he hit town,
Stoner formed his ."Christian
Anti-Jewish Party," dedicated to
"destroying communism" and
"freeing America from the Jews."
Advertisements proclaiming
Stoner's organization as "the
only political party in America
which dares to offer a solution
for the Jewish problem" appear-
ed in a number of small papers
in the Atlanta area and Stoner
began mailing out application
blanks and postcards emblazoned
with such slogans as: "Without
the Jews there would be no Com-
munism," "The Jews have our
money and we want it back,"
"Jew-devils have no place in a
Christian country," etc.
In applying for membership
in the Christian Anti-Jewish
Party, applicants were advised
that "the customary initiation
fee" was $15 and that they
would have to renounce any and
all political allegiance and
henceforth give their full poli-
tical suppoit to . ... the Arch-
leader (Stoner)." Furthermore,
they had to promise that they
would "never believe Jewish or
Jewish-inspired lies that are
directed" against Stoner and his
party.
Stoner's "membership drive"
aroused the wrath of most
Georgians who received the
mailing. The League's Atlanta
office was deluged with calls, and
protests began - flooding the FBI
and the Postmaster's office.
Local, indignation increased
when, a few week? before the
November elections, Stoner sent
out a mass mailing of a highly
controversial pamphlet put out
by the Democratic executive
Committee in support of a pro-
posed amendment, -favored by
Gov. Talmadge, extending the
"County Unit" voting system to

the general state elections.
Stapled to the pamphlets were
samples of the Christian Anti-
Jewish Party s own vicious prop-
aganda, including a sticker iden-
tifying communism with Juda-
ism. Gov . Talmadge promptly

'

denied that he had anything to
do with the mailing, but its
appearance drew strong pro-
tests from leading citizens
throughout the state and Stoner
and his party were publicly de-
nounced in the Georgia press,

Italian Catholics Insist
On Fund Preference

ROME, (JTA)—The fact that
the Catholic Church in Italy
gave sanctuary to Jews and oth-
er minorities during the Nazi-
Fascist persecutions entitles it
to receive financial assistance
for the building of churches and
parish houses, according to pro-
ponents of a bill now before the
Italian Parliament to spend
$12,000,000 for this purpose.
This is one of the arguments
used by members of Premier Al-
cide de Gasperi's Christian
Democratic Party to support the
contention that the Catholic
Church is entitled to preferen-
tial treatment in the use of tax
funds. Religious minorities op-
pose the measure, which pro-
vides no funds for buildings of
any other religious movement.

In the Assembly two bills were

Discover Old Gravestone

FRANK F u R T, (JTA) — A
gravestone bearing the inscrip-
tion, "Israel, son of Mordecai,"
and dated 1284 was discovered
by workmen here • restoring the
Frankfurt Cathedral. The Ca-
thedral is located on the site of
a Jewish cemetery that was de-
stroyed • in 1349, when the Jews
in this city were subjected to
persecution. The stone was
later used in the altar work of
the Cathedral.
