WASHINGTON--Messages of congratulations from Jewish organizations on
the occasion of his inauguratiola were received at the White House by President
Eisenhower Tuesday. There was a greeting from Israel's President Itzhak Ben Zvi.
Messages of American Jewish groups expressed the hope that America, under Pres-
ident Eisenhower's direction, 'will continue its determined course to secure freedom
and democracy for all people living under oppression.
President Eisenhower used two Bibles when he took the oath of office. One
was his own and the other was George Washington's Bible. The President's Bible was
opened to II Chronicles, Chapter 7, Verse 14, reading:
"If my people which are called by my name shall humble themselves and
. pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from
Heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land."
The George Washington Bible was opened to Psalm CXVII, Verse 1: "Except
the Lord build the house they labor in vain that built it; except the Lord keep the
city, the watchman waketh but in vain."
Rabbi Abba Hillel Silver delivered a prayer at the ceremony. The benediction
was delivered by 'Protestant Bishop Henry Knox Sherill. The invocation was de-
livered by the Most Rev. Patric A. Obolfe, Catholic Archbishop of Washington. The
text of Dr. Silver's prayer reads:
"Oh God Who are beyond our knowledge but near to our hearts and our
minds, we pray this day for Thy servant Dwight David Eisenhower as he takes on
the burden of the high office of President of the United States of America. Keep
him with great kindness, oh Ruler, of Na tions, and give him a wise and understand-
ing heart that he may guide Thy people in these shadowed times in truth and
steadfastness, in patience and in love. Guide then his hand always to Thy purpose
and His will to Thy service. May he be the bringer of good tidings and the archi- .
tact of a new hope for our country and for mankind.
"May Thy spirit rest upon the Vice-President of the United States and upon
all the chosen representatives of our government. Help us to preserve the y blessed
heritage of our freedom and make secure our institutions of law and equality
and justice. May it be given unto all of us to walk in the dignity of free men secure
in our right and faithful in the observance of our prized citizenship. Make us all of
one heart so that together, as one people, oh God, we may move forward un-
afraid of the tasks and challenges of the inscrutable years which lie ahead.
Amen."
In a telegram to President Eisenhower, Hadassah advised him that it had planted
18 trees in Israel in his name Tuesday. Mrs. Samuel J. Rosensohn, Hadassah presi-
dent, explained in the telegram that the number 18 was • selected because in the
Hebrew it is the symbol of life.

. JERUSALEM—On Monday night, the Knesset voted, 89
to six, to refer the issue of Soviet attacks on Zionism and
Jews to the Foreign Affairs Committee. The vote revealed a
split in Mapam, with Dr.. Sneh and three others voting with
the Communists, two Mapam deputies abstaining and seven
voting with the government coalition. Earlier the Soviet gov-
ernment was accused of promoting' anti-Jewish hatred after
"spiritually 'liquidating the Jews."
Moshe Sharett told the deputies that the. Israel govern-
ment "will expose in the United Nations and on every other
platform the campaign of instigation against the Jewish people
and its competent public bodies which now is going on - in
countries under Communist rule, and will raise its voice in
warning of the danger threatening millions of Jews therein.'
He continued: "The Israel government will continue to de-
mand with utmost vigor that all Jews who desire to seek sal-
vation in Zion shall be permitted to do so. Any attempt by
persons or public bodies in Israel to justify or attempt to de-
fend anti-Jewish instigation imperiling the safety of Jews
in any land will, be regarded by Israel as a hostile act against
Israel from which necessary consequences will be drawn."

Agitation in the Knesset reached its peak when Communist
Deputy Shmuel Mikunis rose to speak. Speaker Sprinzak was forced
to call for order a number of times: He rebuked Mikunis and de-
manded no repetition of such phrases as "gang of criminal doctors''
or "this excitement here made on orders from Washington." Min-
isters lost their calm and dignity, rising to shoutat Mikunis.

ZOA Asks Moscow to Halt Anti-Jewish Policy

NEW YORK, (JTA)—An appeal to the Communist governments
to halt their present anti-Jewish policy in order "to avert a major
catastrophe" was issued by the national executive and adminis-
trative councils of the Zionist Organization of America folloWing
an all-day joint meeting. The appeal emphasized that the anti--
Jewish propaganda, now being directed from Moscow, may lead to
pogroms on Jews in all countries behind the Iron Curtain.
The statement, presented at the meeting by Dr. Irving Miller,
ZOA president, and adopted unanimously by the 200 Zionist lead-
ars who attended the session, declared that the "Zionist Organiza-
tion of America repudiates with contempt the fantastic charges
against the Zionist movement and Israel which are being fabricated
by COmmunist propagandists in Eastern Europe."

Jewish Homes Raided in East Berlin

BERLIN, (JTA)—Raids on Jewish homes by Communist police
authorities in East Berlin were carried out, with many Jews de-
prived of their identity documents in order to prevent them from
leaving their homes.
The raids followed the escape into West Berlin of a number
of Jewish leaders from Soviet-held parts of Germany, including
Julius Meyer, president of the Berlin Jewish Community and de-
puty of the East German Parliament; Helmuth Losher, head of
the Jewish community in Leipzig; Leo Loewenkopf, head of the
Dresden Jewish community, and Guenther Singer, president of
the Jewish community of Erfurt.

Israel at Fever Pitch Over
Soviet Onslaught; Histadrut
Moves to Expel Communists

TEL AVIV, (JTA)—Anger and excitement over the new Soviet
attack on the Jews trapped behind the Iron Curtain swept Israel
and almost completely obscured this country's -concern over the
security situation in the light of the arming- of the Arab states.
Feeling ran high here as the Anti-Communist League placaded
the streets of Tel Aviv with demands fc -: the arrest of the Com-
munist leaders and as some elements called for suppression of the
Communist party.
Army authorities barred distribution of Kol Ha-am, Communist
daily, to the troops, as Interior Minister Rokach threatened to use
his powers to ban the paper for provoking disorder. :
The Israeli police guard outside the Soviet Legation in Tel Avi'
was increased. An official of the legation was reported to have ex-
pressed astonishment at the great number •of persons who tele-
phoned the lega.tion„ to verify the news reports from MOSCOW
A former Chief Rabbi of Moscow died of a heart attack while
listening to a broadcast of the news from Moscow. The rabbi, 73-
year-old Jacob Clemes, has two children, both physicians in Mos-
cow. Neither of the two—the son, a professor of medicine, and. the
daughters a practicing physician—were named in the Moscow'
indictment. Clemes served as Moscow Chief Rabbi 1927 to 1931

The Histadrut, Israel's Federation of Labor, moved to secure
the expulsion of all Communists from the labor federation and
its associated bodies. The move was introduced by Mordecat
Nanmir, secretary-general of the federation, once Israel's Ambas-
sador to Moscow, He denounced the Moscow blood libel as de..
famation and desecration of the Socialist movement.
By a vote of 27 to one (a Communist), and with eight members

of the left-wing Mapam Party abstaining, the executive instructed
the Histadrut steering committee to act urgently on the expul-
sion. of , Communists • from' the federation and its 'affiliates.
