To Open Temple Israel Artists Series

recital, as Temple Israel opens
its second annual artists series
at 8:30 p.m,, Jan. 25, in the
temple.

Detroit Friends of JTS
To Plan Campaign
At Sunday Meeting

The special gifts phase of the
campaign now being conducted
by the Detroit Friends of the
Jewish Theological Sethinary
will be completed this Sunday
at an afternoon
reception at the
home of Sol
Eisenberg, a co-
chairman of the
Detroit _Friends.
Special guest
at the reception
will be Rabbi
Joel S. Geffen
of New, York,
director of field
activities and
community serv- Eisenberg
vices at the Seminary.
The Eisenberg affair is an an-
nual event of the Detroit cam-
paign. Eisenberg, a patron of the
Seminary and a member of it's
national planning and cam-
, paign committee, will partici-
pate as the Detroit delegate in
the annual meeting of that body
in Miami Beach on Feb. 6 and
7th. - Eisenberg is president of
Kenwal Products Corp., and is a
member of Adas Shalom Syna-
gogue.
The present status of the
Seminary campaign is approxi-
mately ten percent above that
of last year, Eisenberg revealed.
The number of Seminary pat-
rons—contributors of $1,000 or
more—has already been doubled
he disclosed. The campaign co-
chairman estimated that the
current Seminary drive would
be the most successful in the
10-year history of the Detroit
Friends of the Seminary.
Individual synagogue cam-
paigns in behalf of the Sem-
inary are simultaneously taking
place in Congregation Shaarey
Zedek, Adas Shalom Synagogue,
Congregation Bnai Moshe and
Beth Aaron Synagogue—all of
which are affiliated with the
Conservative movement.

Tu b'Shvat iNF Tree
Planting Appeals in
Detroit's Synagogues

Announcement was made
this week by a number of
synagogues that occurrence
of Tu (Tisha) b'Shvat on Sat-
urday (Jan. 31) will be utiliz-
ed for appeals for tree. plant-
ing in Israel through the Jew-
ish National Fund.
In view of this voluntary
synagogue effort, William
Hordes, president of the JNF
Council, announced that oth-
er synagogues will be mobi-
lized for this purpose.

a member of the JNF syna-

Center Teen-Agers Pick
Club Council Delegates

Teen-age groups at the Jewish
Center, meeting at the Davison
branch, have selected their rep-
resentatives of the Branch's
Club Council.
Shelley Kane and Rhoda Kar-
bel were selected by the Swades.
Jerry Weinstein and Norman
Woronoff will represent the Cav-
aliers. Judy Citrin and Florence
Shamborn were selected by the
Sa fires; Barry Levine, of the
drama Group; Susan Feldman
and Shirley Katz, of the Col-
legiates; and Herbert Bidlofsky
and Sheldon Simon, of the
Dukes.

known for his masterful tech-
nique and style on the key-
board, and has 'appeared with
leading symphony orchestras in
many American . cities.
Following his release frOm the
armed forces, Sorin devoted two
years to the re- ,.
study of music,
and then re-
turned to • the
concert stage,
via a tour of
Central and
South America.
He began his
p is n o studies
at six, and
when he was 12
he won city,
Sorin
state and na-
tional awards. He was awarded
the National Federation of Mu-
sic Clubs $1,000 prize and the
Schubert Memorial Award.
He won scholarships to Chi-
cago schools and to New York's
Juilliard School of Music.
Miss Coehlo, who is a folk
singer as well as a musician, has
won acclaim on five continents,
appearing in Europe, North
America, Asia, Africa and Aus-
tralia.
Other concerts will feature
Richard Tucker on March 22,
and Josef Gingold, violinst, and
pianists Ernst Victor Wolff and
Karl Haas in the final program
on April 26.

Dr. Freehof Preaches
At Beth El, Tonight

Dr. Solomon B. Freehof, fa-
mous scholar and speaker, will
be the guest preacher at Tem-
ple Beth El services today, at
8:15 p.m., on the subject "It Still
Takes Courage." A graduate of
Hebrew Union College, Dr. Free-
hof was a member of the fac-
ulty of HUC for
nine years and
then became
rabbi of the
K A M Temple
in Chicago, the
oldest reform
congregation in
that city, where
he served 10
years. Since
1934, • he has
been affiliated
with ROdef
Shalom Temple Dr. Freehof
in Pittsburgh. He is a past pres-
ident of the Central Conference
of American Rabbis, a 'member
of the executive board of the
Union of Hebrew Congregations,
chairman of the Commission on
Jewish Education of the UAHC-
HUC, and a former chairman of
the division of religious activi-
ties of the National Jewish Wel-
fare Board. He is the author of
a number of important books.
