Announcement was made this le week that $25,000 has already been remitted to New York for immediate use for Histadrut projects in Israel. At Sunday's rally, the hun- dreds of Histadrut adherents were inspired by addresses of Rudolph Halley, president of the New York City Council who be- came nationally famous as asso- ciate of Senator Kefauver in the crime investigations, and local leaders, to styive for a successful campaign. A major portipn of the funds raised this year will be used to finance the surgical pavilion of the Eliezer Kaplan Memorial Hospital at Rehovoth, to serve the entire Negev in Israel. Harry Schumer, chairman of the executive board of the campaign, in his opening re- marks at Sunday's meeting, presenting Morris Lieberman as chairman, called on friends of Histadrut to pool their forces to assure sucess for the drive and its major project of building a hospital wing. Halley declared that the reality of Israel today couldn't be without Histadrut. He as- serted that Israel is the only politically stable factor in the Near East and urged that the United States should do all it can to assure security for the Jewish state as a vital partner in the battle for democracy. Mr. Halley stressed that the Histadrut in Israel has been unique in its diversified achieve- ments, not only in. the labor union field, but in building holines and community institu- tions throughout the land, estab - lishing cooperative enterprises for new immigrants and provid- ing medical care fop , nearly one million men, women and chil - dren. Rabbi Leon Fram gave the invocation at the 'opening cam- paign rally. The musical pro- gram was provided by Miss Ruth Kobart, accompanied by Rebek- ah Frohman. Preliminary reports from var- ious divisions and landsman- schaften indicate that initial solicitations are' showing sub- stantial increases over last year. A new division, the Scrap Trade Industry, under the honorary chairmanship of Leo Spector, has undertaken to finance the building of a clin- ic of Kupat Holim and set it- self a quota of $25,000 towards that project, which will be dis - cussed at a gathering Sunday morning at the home of Leo Spector, 4053 Cortland. The new division will be headed by Sam Schwartzberg, chairman; Leo Borden, Moe Saslove, vice- chairmen, and a • committee consisting of Abe Saslove, Har- ry Grossman, Max Weiner and Abe Weinstein with several more trade leaders to be added to the committee. The first Histadrut campaign rally will be held this Sunday, 2 p.m., at the Labor Zionist In- stitute, 13722 Linwood. The 1953 membership drive of the Sholem Aleichem Institute will be launched Sunday at a bruncheon of drive volunteers and friends , of the Institute, 1 p.m., at the Institute building, 18495 Wyoming. The drive, which has as ,its goal the recruitment of 1,000 members during a five-week period, is headed by co-chair- men Louis LaMed, Sam Jacob- son and Louis Reder. \ Isaac Fin- kelstein, one of the founders of the Institute, is honorary chair- man of the drive. Max Davis, Nathan Rosen, Jacob Cukerman, Louis Reder, Jack Malamud, Morris Friedman and Ida Ko- maroff will serve as vice-chair- men. The Sholem Aleichem Institute for the past 26 years has served, as a 'cultural and educational center here. It has provided a well rounded Jewish education to a generation of Detroiters and has conducted an adult program for its member8 and friends under professional guid- ance. "The new building on 18495 Wyoming offers opportunities to enlarge the adult program and expand the school," the committee pointed out. "The membership drive Will enlarge the circle of friends and Jewish parents who are eager to par- take in its cultural and social activities and who are .anxious to provide their children with the priceless Jewish heritage which is their birthright." The executive council of the drive, headed by Joe Baskin, has enrolled parents of children who attend the Institute and friends to serve as volunteers. The bruncheon this Sunday will serve as a mobilization of all the volunteers to follow through with the quota of 1,000 members of the Institute for 1953. MAX M. FISHER was elected to the board of the Jewish Wel- fare Federation to fill the va- cancy created by the passing away of Henry Meyers, it was announced by Samuel H. Rub- iner, president of Federation. Fisher, whose term will extend to 1954, was born in Pittsburgh. A leading industrialist in the oil industry, he serves as chair- man of ;the finance committee of the Jewish Hospital Associa- tion and is a member of the capital needs committee.
