many worthy causes.
As greetings start to pour in
from all quarters in celebration
of his 65th birthday on Sunday,
the many important causes
which Mr. Cohane has further-
ed with his efforts in thought,
speech and action are brought
to mind.
He well remembers the day
back in 1907, when as a stu-
dent at the Detroit College of
born here on Jan. 18, 1888—he
first became active in the
Jew i s h community in 1910
when he served as president
of the Young 'Men's Hebrew
Association. He was a prime
organizer and the first presi-
dent of the Jewish Commun-
ity Council in 1915.
From 1916 to 1922 he was a
member of the board of trus-
tees of Cong. Shaarey Zedek,
and in 1918 he served several
years on the City of Detroit's
Americanization Committee.
His4 efforts in behalf of the
nation during World War I were
numerous, and included speech-
es as a four-minute speaker
throughout the state for Lib-
erty Bonds.
In 1921 he formed the law
firm of Cohane, Rhodes, Garvett
and Frankel, which included
Samuel J. Rhodes, Morris Gar-
vett and Samuel D. Frankel.
A new partnership was form-
ed on Dec. 9, 1924 when he was
married to Regene Freund, a
fellow attorney, and they- or-
ganized the law firm of Cohane
and Cohane, with offices, theme
and now, at 1026 Buhl Bldg.
• Mr. Cohane has served as
chairman of speakers' com-
mittee of the local YMCA's
drive for $5,000,000; represent-
ed the American Bar Associa-
tion at the U. S. Attorney
General's crime conference in
1934; wis vice-chairman of
the ABA section on criminal
law; served on the real estate
committee of the Detroit Bar
Association; was chairman of
the publicity committee of the
Detroit Boy Scouts; was on
the board of directors of the
Michigan Committee for Men-
tal Hygiene.

Mr. Cohane has been an ar-
dent Zionist for 45 years.
In 1937 he was chairman of the
Allied Jewish Campaign Speak-
er's Bureau, and has taken an
active part in nearly a score
of other campaigns. He also
served as vice-president of Pis-
gah Lodge, Bnai Brith, and is a
member of Temple Beth El and
Union Masonic Lodge.

Carmel School to Add
Afternoon Session
Plans for the enlargement of
Carmel Hebrew School's nursery
with the formation of an addi-
tional afternoon session are
proceeding following approval
of .a resolution voted at its re-
cent meeting.
The nursery is designed for
working mothers, and provides
scholarships to children of serv-
icemen. Youngsters receive two
meals a day at the school.

Broner is a native Detroiter
who now lives in New York City.
He has a master's degree in art
from Wayne University, studied
at the art school of the Detroit
Society of Arts and Crafts and
with several New York artists.
His works have been exhibited
