Israel Reassured by U.S.
On Arms Policy to Arabs
WASHINGTON, (JTA)—A
spokesman for the Embassy of
Israel said that Israel has been
given to understand that its
concern over arms shipments to
Arab states claiming belliger-
ency against Israel was fully
understandable and that U. S.
arms policy would be guided
strictly by the United States-
United Kingdom-French declar-
ation of May 25, 1950 guarantee-
ing the bordets of all Middle
East states against aggression.
This was reassuring, the
spokesman said, as far as Amer-
ican arms are concerned. With
regard to the supply of British
jet aircraft to Near Eastern
to
states, Israel - has been
understand that this was
s uni-
wa
lateral action, said the Israel
spokesman.
The Israel announcement
was made, the Embassy
spokesman said, in the light
of reports that the State De-
partment views munitions
shipments to the Arabs as
desirable and implying ap-
proval of • the British plan.
The spokesman said that re-
ports were not in accord with
the impression received by the
Israelis from their talks with
the Department.
Previously, informed sources
here reported that the United
States Government had decided
to dismiss Israel's complaints
against the supply of arms to the
Arabs and had no objection to
British sales of large quantities
of jet aircraft to the Arabs.
These sources had declared
that in the American view these
projected sales- would not neces-
sarily lead to a Middle East
arms race and would not jeop-
ardize the Israeli-Arab truce.
They said that although Israel
Ambassador Abba S. Eban had
asked Secretary of State Dean
Acheson to consider that the
Arabs claimed a state of _ war
to exist, refused to negotiate on
peace and maintained a block-
ade against Israel, the State
Department did not share Is-
rael's alarm.
In its view, these sources said,
munitions shipments to the
Arabs were viewed as desirable
to advance Western relations
with the Arabs and to strength-
en the Arab world against Com-
ro u n ism.
The British Government has
held informal discussions with
the United States on the sub-
ject of Israel's objections. This
was done - because NATO obliga-
tions require mutual agreement
before arms shipments may be
sent out of the NATO area.
Rep. Emanuel Celler pro-
tested to Secretary Acheson that
shipments of American arms to
the Arabs might set off renewed
aggression against Israel.
New Israel Protest to Britain
Against Sale of Jets to Egypt
LONDON, (JTA) — The Israel
Embassy in Britain has deliver-
ed a note to the Foreign Office
asking the British Government
to reconsider its policy of sup-
plying jet planes and other
arms to the Arab states unless
these states demonstrate a read-
iness to negotiate peace with
Israel. Copies of the note were
delivered to the United States
and. French Embassies in Israel.

The Israeli note pointed out
that the Arab states continue
to carry out hostile and war-
like' acts against Israel, demon-
strate little prospect of over-
coming their internal weakness-
es and have indicated no will-
ingness to undertake regional
defense responsibilities. It in-
sisted that under such circum-
stances the supply of arms to
the Arabs aggravates the threat
to Israel security.
The note also emphasized that
the supply of arms to the Arabs
at this point cannot be recon-
ciled with the tri-parite pledge
of May, 1950. In that declara-
tion the United States, Britain
and France pledged to guarantee
the status quo in the Middle
East and to prevent aggression
against any of thp states in the
region.
The Manchester Guardian this
week criticized the British Gov-
ernment for supplying jet planes
to the countries of the Middle
East at a time when the Arab
states are directing "bellicose
pronouncements" at both Brit-
ain and Israel.

tion to the United Nations par-
tition proposal of 1947.
Force Polish Jews
To Reject Zionism
TEL AVIV, (JTA) — Jews
throughout Poland have been
forced to hold meetings pledging
their solidarity to Poland and
opposition Zionism. Political ob-
servers now expect a trial of
three or four Jewish Commu-
nists, replete with confessions
charging Israel and Zionism
with espionage against Poland,
as ail object lesson to Jews who
may waver in their support of
the Polish regime.
The Israel Government has
taken no action on the' arrest of
two employees of the Israel Le-
gation in Warsaw, pending re-
ceipt of the official Polish note
on the subject, it was learned
here. One of the arrested men,
Arieh Lerner, had the task of
processing visas to Israel when
he worked at the legation.
The Israel Foreign Ministry
has been studying the Polish
note declaring Minister Arieh
Kubovi persona non grata. It has
become clear from the study
that not only has Dr. Kubovi
been charged with espionage,
but all employees of the Israeli
legation are also accused of par-
ticpating in such activities.
Dr. Kubovi commenting on
the Polish government's note
charging him with taking tours
in Czechoslovakia "connected
with espionage" declared that
his visits to synagogues and
Jewish centers in Poland were
made with the full knowledge of
the Polish authorities, and that
on some of his visits he was fol-
lowed by agents of the secret
service.

Amounts to Chicken Feed
TEL AVIV, (JTA)—A Soviet
Government agency has offered
to sell Israel poultry feed, it was
reported here. The offer was
made through the Israel Com-
mittee for the Encouragement
of International Trade which
was formed at the recent Mos-
cow economic conference. It
was transmitted to the Israel
Government, which is studying
it.
Meanwhile, major quantities
of chicken are arriving in Tel
Aviv markets as chicken farm-
ers attempt to unlock their
stores before the government
reimposes controls on fowl. The
farmers fear new controls be-
cause price of fowl tripled im-
mediately after controls were
lifted.
