We appeal to you 4o exercise executive clemency

to commute the death sentence imposed on

Ethel and Julius Rosenberg

IN DETROIT

The following are excerpts from • a letter ad-
dressed to President Truman by the Reverend
Henry Hitt Crane of Central Methodist Church,
Woodward and Adams, Detroit.

Dear Mr. President:

"I most urgently appeal to you to com-
mute the Rosenbergs' death decree to im-
prisonment.
*
*

"It is not now so much a question of guilt_
or innocence. It is a question, especially for
those who may think the Rosenbergs guilty,
of reso- rting to such an irrevocably extreme
punishment for a crime admittedly not more
serious than others that have received a
much lighter penalty . . The inevitable
result will serve to discredit our Country's
cherished reputation for freedom and jus-
tice to such a degree that the very mention
of their names will become a perpetual re-
buke. Thus we will furnish a critical world
with propaganda material that will far out-
weigh any so-called good we may assume
we are accomplishing.

"May God give you the wisdom and strength
to make the courageouS decision to com-
mute the death sentence to imprisonment,
that there may later be opportunity to de-
termine finally the question of guilt—and
that justice and mercy may not fail.

"Sincerely yours,

THE WHOLE WORLD joins in our appeal to you, Mr. President, to use your
constitutional power to save these fellow Americans from death — by as
sentence never before carried out for conspiracy in time of peace.

Dr. Crane also pointed out that the English
scientist, Dr. May, Fuchs, together with Axis
Sally and Tokyo Rose, all of whom were con-
victed of aiding the enemy in war time, all
received sentences of less than a score years
imprisonment.

WE CAN ALL HELP
SAVE THE ROSENBERG'S LIVES

We all want to save our country from the tragic

consequences of the execution. WE ALL WANT

TO SAVE THE LIVES OF ETHEL AND JULIUS

ROSENBERG.

AND WE CAN HELP

Our letters to President Truman, The White

House, Washington 25, will help. Telegrams,
SENT TODAY, will help even more.

10—THE JEWISH NEWS — Friday, January 9, 1953

Dr. Harold C. Urey, Nobel Prize Winner and out-
standing muclear scientist, on December 16,
wrote that the Government's case "rests upon
the testimony of David and Ruth Greenglass. I
found the testimony of the Rosenbergs more be-
lievable than that of the Greenglasses."
Joining 200 others in messages of support to the
Rosenbergs' attorney were Rabbi Abba Billet
Silver of Cleveland and Dr. Harlow Shapley of
Harvard.

Follow the example of these eminent lead-
ers: Wire or write to President Truman ask-
ing that he commute the death sentence. DO
IT TODAY.

We can also help meet the heavy expense
of the defense and of the clemency campaign.
Funds are also urgently needed to maintain
the two small sons of the Rosenbergs. Con-
tributions will be gratefully acknowledged by
