Raphael — "Mr. Israel" — Hal-
pern, the wrestling rabbi from
Israel, is rapidly becoming a
popular figure in the grunt and
groan arena. It is not only be-
cause of the unique situation of
a wrestling rabbi (Halpern was
graduated from a Jerusalem
rabbinical school), but because
of his ability as a grappler.
Now he stands ready to take
on one of the nation's most pop-
ular wrestlers, Gene — "Mr.
America"—Stanlee, in an un-
usual benefit match.
The aim is to raise money for
the . Yeshiva Academy of Long
Island.
Promoter Freddie Sommers is
staging the event, to be held
Jan. 20 at Sunnyside 'Garden, on
Long Island.
Halpern, born in Vienna, was
brought to Palestine when he
was three years old. Now 25, he .
has pioneered in developing
physical education among Is-
raeli youth. He directs 52 gym-
nasiums in Israel and is reputed
to have. personally taught some
10,000 ioungsters the art of body
building. Halpern, six feet tall,
,weighs 215 pounds.
