Mixed Emotions—Pro and Con—Mark Last Minute Appeals for Rogenbergs Last minute appeals for corn- mutation of the death sentence handed to Julius and Ethel Ros- enberg are marked by mixed emotions. Detroit's eminent Christian clergyman, Dr. Henry Hitt Crane, bases his appeal on his opposition to capital punisk- ment — a Number One argu- ment resorted to by many re- ligious leaders—and his belief. that the condemned couple should not ' be given a more extreme sentence than h a s been handed out anywhere in the world, especially since they are accused of having re- leased information to a nation with whom we were then on friendly terms. Another great Christian lead- er,- Dr. Harold C. Urey, a nobel prize winner and one of the. world's greatest nuclear scien- tists, said he is "amazed and completely outraged by the un- equal punishment" and declared that he "found the testimony of the Rosenbergs more believable than that of the Greenglasses." Dr. Abba Hillel Silver, one of the leading rabbis in the world today, stating that he accepts t h e court's verdict that the Rosenbergs violated the country's espionage laws, nevertheless joined in the ap- peal for clemency, declaring he believes the death sentence "unprecedented in the legal annals of our country as a punishment for espionage in peace time" and added he be- * Heves "our country is strong and great-hearted enough to be merciful." On the other hand Dr. Daniel A. Poling, in an appeal issued in his own behalf, and Rabbi Wil- liam F. Rosenblum, of Temple Israel, New York, and Clarence E. Manion, Catholic law pro- fessor, charged that the Rosen- berg case "is being exploited by typical Communist trickery to destroy faith in our American instutitions." Their statement denies that there has been "a planned mis- Carriage of justice arising from anti-Semitic and other repre- hensible influences. Neither ra- cial nor religious prejudice has been involved in this prosecu- tion. All responsible organiza- tions concerned with protecting civil liberties have stated so publicly." T h e Poling-Rosenblum-Man- ion statement concludes: "Appeals in regard to clemen- cy should directed to the Rosenbergs th'emselves. They have revealed no regret for the harth which they have done our nation nor any desire to assist the Departthent of Justice. They have failed to take steps that might warrant clemen6y," Meanwhile the Rosenbergs again proclaimed their inno- cence, and; in pleading for re- duction of their sentences, asked "for justice, not mercy." . . Alumatic f Windows Inc. 8205 LYNDON TE. 4-2210 LONDON, (JTA)—The con- tinuing drop in Israel's purchas- ing power in sterling bloc coun- tries and the expected influx of German goods as a result of the West German-Israel reparations pact must further reduce Bri- tish-Israel trade unless Britain takes immediate action to re- verse this trend, the Anglo- Israel Chamber of Commerce pointed out in a memorandum to the British and Israel govern- ments. The memorandum reveals that British firms have already lost some business in the Israeli mar- ket because of a shortage of sterling in Israel. It warns that further losses are "certain" if Is- rael finds itself unable to sell many of its traditional exports. in Britain or other sterling coun- tries. If this development con- tinues the memorandum says, Israel will be forded to find other outlets for reciprocal trade The only solution for safe- guarding present -British-lsraeli trade relations is a reciprocal trade agreement, the memor- andum recommends. With this as insurance for a long term re- lationship, the memorandum ad- vises that Britain increase its purchases from the Jewish State in Greer to give Israel enough -sterlint currency at this time to continue importing British goods. • You'll enjoy the finest hot water service available when you have the right-sized automatic electric water heater.
