Schumer Wins Service Award

Funeral se7vices were held
last Friday for Dr. Hugo Freund,
prominent Detroit diagnostician,
who died Dec.
24 at the age of
71. Only a few
days before his
death, he was
named consult-
ant in medicine
a n d chairman
of the research
committee of
Sinai Hospital.
D r . Freund's
father, the late
Adolph Freund,
was one of De-
troit's p i o neer
Dr. Freund Jewish 1 e a ders
and was nationally prominent
in the ranks of Bnai Brith.
Surviving Dr. Freund are his
wife and three children by his
first marriage, Lisette, Mar-
garet and Richard.

A native of Detroit, Dr.
Freund received his M. D. at
the University of Michigan in
1905. He became first assist-
ant of internal medicine and
an instructor at University
Hospital of Ann Arbor in the
same year he was graduated.

Dr. Freund entered private
practice in Detroit in 1907 and
two years later joined the staff
at Harper Hospital as associate
physician in the Department of
Internal Medicine, becoming
chief of the Harper Department
of Internal Medicine in 1927.
At present he is senior . consul-
tant of internal medicine at
Harper, consultant to Receiving
Hospital and Children's Hospi-
tal, and the Haven Sanitorium.
He is a member of the board of
Trustees of Oakland Hospital.
In addition to his other medi-
cal service, Dr. Freund has
served as a member of the De-
troit Board of Health, a mem-
ber of the Detroit Welfare
Commission, and holds the post
of president of the Children's
Fund of Michigan and of the
Child Research Center.
He has made numerous con-
tributions to medical literature.

Founder of Swedish Zionist
Organization Dies at 70

STOCKHOLM, (JTA) - Leon
Lapidus, veteran Zionist and
one of the founders of the
Swedish Zionist Organization,
died here at the age of • 70. The
founder of the Herzlia Publish-
ing Company in Sweden, Mr.
Lapidus was vice-president of
the Swedish section of the
WOrld Jewish Congress.
