Here is an item under the generic title "chutzpah." Anti-
Semite George W. Armstrong, the Texas oil man, applied to the
Federal Court to force the government to give hiM a refund of
$6,276 on his 1948 taxes on the ground that the white supremacy
and anti-Semitic literature he had been disseminating through
the Armstrong Foundation was an educational activity and, there-
fore, tax deductible. The government contended that the Founda-
tion's pamphlets and books were anti-Semitic and that the Foun-
dation was used for propaganda and to influence legislation. Fed
eral Judge T. Whitfield Davidson of Ft. Worth threw Armstrong's
case out of court.
Jacque Duclos. of France is undoubtedly an authority on com-
munism. It seems however that he has now assumed the pre-
rogative as an authority on Jewish affairs, with Prague as his
guide and mentor. Speaking recently in Paris he impudently de-
veloped a new thesis of Jewish survival .while conveniently for
getting that Jewish cultural and spiritual life is being mercilessly
smothered in the Communist Garden of Eden. Zionism, he ponti-
faced, makes it impossible for Jews to become integrated in the
countries of their residence and therefore produces anti-Semitism.
On that premise he developed the thesis that the Communist war
against Zionism is essentially a war against anti-Semitism. Poor
Duclos, the anti-Semites equate Zionism with communism and
he equates Zionism with anti-Semitism. But whatever the equa-
tion, the communists. it seems are now sharing a common plat-
form with the anti-Semites on the Jewish issue at least.

Obl;ious Inconsistency
A Boston GI recently received the Army's permission to wear .
his hair at least one yard longer than prescribed by military reg-
ulations. The soldier, member of a _northern India war tribe known
as the Sikhs, claimed his religion required him to wear long hair.
Yet some months ago when an orthodox Jewish GI insisted on
keeping beard and peoth on religious grounds he was incarcerated
and his beard was forcibly removed. In the end the Jewish GI
yielded under pressure of court martial. The Army evidently has
two standards when measuring religious convictions. -

Here and There
It was no mere gesture on the part of Israel's new President
to celebrate his first Sabbath as chief of state at synagogue serv-
ices. President Ben Zvi has always considered himself a traditional
Jew. He has a permanent pew at the Jeshurun synagogue in
Jerusalem. Victor Bienstock, director of the Jewish Telegraphic
Agency, tells me he met Ben Zvi some years ago in London. It
was late Friday - afternoon and the two men were so engrossed
in conversation that they failed to realize that the winter sun
had begun to set. Victor hailed a cab. but Ben Zvi refused to
join, declaring it was Sabbath eve and that he would walk to his
hotel. Vic still remembers the two-mile hike he made that wintry
night with the man who was destined to become Israel's second
President . .. Irving Geist tops the. list as President-elect Eisen-
hower's choice as Ambassador to Israel.
It is not true that Dr. Abba Hillel Silver did not eulogize the
late President Weizmann. In fact his sermon on Weizmann at his
synagogue took close to an hour . . . I am not a Silver chassid.
In fact I firmly believe that this colorful and dynamic leader has
blundered badly, to the detriment of the American Zionist move-
ment and its relationS with Israel. But when he is traduced by
elements to whom Zionism and Israel is an anathema it becomes
the duty of friends and opponents to come in his defense. Because
of a cunningly distorted news report by communist newspapers, it
was made to appear that Dr. Silver turned apologist for the
Prague travesty in a speech he recently delivered in Philadelphia.
A verbatim transcript of the speech, now in possession of the
American Zionist Council, should serve to dispel that impression.
Painting the grave dangers to Israel, which, he said, was still
surrounded by unreconciled enemies, Silver said it was hard for
him "to conceive that that group of states (the Soviet Bloc) has
suddenly, in four years, become anti-Zionist and anti-Israel---but
there it is. By skillfully omitting the phrase "but there it is," the
communist press made it appear that Silver had joined their
chorus on the Prague travesty.
For the first time in many years Ambassador Eban had to
forego attendance at a UJA national conference. His wife was in
the hospital giving birth to a baby and, although it was the second
event of its kind in the Eban family, the youthful diplomat could
not control his anxiety and spent the hours walking impatiently
in the corridors of Flower Hospital. Edward Warburg got a good
laugh from the dinner audience at the recent UJA conference
when, on announcing Eban's predicament, he laughingly dis-
closed on the basis of grape-vine reports that the Ambassador was
the first to enter the hospital.

On Dec. 12, Detroit's Common
Council passed a resolution in
tribute to the fine work and
personal achievements of Na-
than Samuels, who prior to his
death this year, was an active
participant in the annual Good-
fellow Old Newsboy sales.
The resolution, presented to
Nathaniel Goldstick, an officer
of the Old Newsboys, was spon-
sored by Councilmen John
Kronk and James Garelick.
The Wayne County Board of
Supervisors previously passed a
similar resolution in honor of
Mr. Samuel's many years of de-
voted service. Irving B. Acker-
man, loc6 attorney, and James
L. Mahon drafted the proposal.
