WHEN THE HANDFUL of
women who started the Infant
Service Group in 1935 began
their organizational activities,
little did they realize that today,
18 years later, it would be recog-
nized as one of the finest organ-
izations of its type . . . That or-
iginal handful of women has
blossomed into what is now a
membership of 200 workers for
a great cause . . . ever alert to
aid needy youngsters . . . This
year, as in other years, Infant
Service Group has taken on an-
other project . . . The women
are purchasing a building which
will soon assist in the education
of more than 20,000 mentally re-
tarded children in Detroit who
do not go to schools or institu-
tions . . . Such a worthy en-
deavor cannot go unrecognized
. . and the women of Infant
Service Group are to be highly
commended for such a great
undertaking.

. "That open window on the
second floor, my friends, is Mr.
Jowett's diggins. I say, would
you like to see the professor
himself?" asked the guide .
The Americans assured him that
they would like nothing better
. . . The guide thereupon picked
up a sizable rock and hurled it
with deadly accuracy through
Jowett's open window ... A
moment later a face purple with
rage appeared in the aperture
. "Aha!" said the guide tri-
umphantly. "That always gets
him. There's the old boy him-
self!"

Favors Kosher Hospital
Editor, The Jewish News
I am a native Detroiter now
on active duty in the armed
forces. I receive The Jewish
News weekly and eagerly look
forward to each coming issue. I
have read with keen interest of
the controversy regarding the
new Jewish hospital.
I am far from being an ortho-
dox Jew, but I am aware of the
traditions of my people and am
immensely proud of them. It is
these traditions that have kept
us a people these many years
through many trials and tribu-
lations. You simply cannot
throw away all vestiges- of the
past like an old worn garment
of clothing. These traditions are
not material things that out-
grow their usefulness. This I feel
should also hold true in the case
of Sinai Hospital. A Jewish hos-
pital without complete Kash-
ruth is a sham and mockery of
the heritage we Jews cherish.
I have the good fortune of
being assistant to Chaplain Da-
vid L. Lieber of Los Angeles, the
Jewish chaplain here at Amaril-
lo Air Force Base. In the course
of my duties I come across many
Jewish people- from every sec-
tion of our country. I have dis-
cussed this problem with many
of these people and I am happy
to say that the great majority
of them agree with me in my
views.

MRS. GERTRUDE ABRAMS
tells the storms of her recently
asking a little grocery boy his
name . . . "Robert," answered
the boy, ' and added that the
last name was Merrill . . . "Rob-
ert Merrill, eh?" said Gertrude.
"That's a pretty well - known
name." . . . "It darn well ought
to be," the boy agreed. "I've
been delivering groceries in this
neighborhood for four years."

DAVE SACHS, back from his
trip to Europe, tells of the guide
who was showing some Ameri-
can tourists through Oxford .. .
"I'd like to see Jowett's study,"
said one of them. "You know,
the fellow who translated Plato."
.. "Easiest thing in the world,"
said the guide, and led his party
