Jews Release Spaniards
From 460 Year-Old Pledge

The descendants of 2,000 Jew-
ish residents of the little Span-
ish town of Vitoria recently re-
leased city officials from a
pledge made 460 years ago to
"preserve unto eternity" the
Jewish Cemetery in the village.
The cemetery grounds, needed
by the city for a housing proj-
ect, were released after a visit
by the town's mayor to Bay-
onne, France where the commu-
nity settled after they were
forced out • of Spain by Ferdi-
nand and Isabella's decree in
1492.
The pledge was made original-
ly in recognition of the service
performed by Jewish doctors
when an epidemic of the bu-
bonic plague swept the city in
1484. A memorial structure will
be erected as a permanent land-
mark to the Jews who formerly
occupied the cemetery.
