The establishment of a full-
equipped surgical pavilion in the
Eliezer Kaplan Memorial Hospi-
tal at Rehovoth, Israel, became
the major project of the 1953
local Histadrut campaign.
Assembled delegates of affili-
ated groups who met last Sun-
day at the Labor Zionist In-
stitute accepted the recom-
mendations presented by the
Detroit delegates to the 29th na-
tional convention of the Nation-
al Committee for Labor Israel.
The surgical pavilion to be
constructed with funds raised
during the forthcoming Detroit
Histadrut campaign will consist
of 11 wards, fully equipped
with operating tables, OxYgen
tents, surgical instruments and -
other equipment.
630 Beds, Five Pavilions
Morris Lieberman, chairman
of the Histadrut campaign,
stated that the Kaplan Me-:
morial Hospital of 630 beds, con-
sisting of five pavilions, will
help alleviate the bed shortage
in Israel, and will serve the en-
tire Negev region south of Beer-
sheba. An estimated 100,000
people now inhabit the Negev,
he said, adding that in the next
five years this figure is expected
to jump to 250,000.
Harry Schumer stressed that
the Kupat Holim standard —
because of necessity—is one bed
per 1,000 population, although
the standard for Israel is 2.5
beds for 1,000 and the world
standard is 5 beds per 1,000.
