Israel. Mourning Dr. Weizmann's
Death Issues
Memorial Stamp

Israel, mourning the loss of
Dr. Chaim Weizmann, its first
President, will honor his mem-
ory with a special commemora-
tive stamp issue to be issued in
December after the close of the
thirty-day period of mourning.

Two stamps, a 30 pr. gray, and
110 pr. blue, show his portrait in
profile, facing the Presidential
standard.
By featuring Dr. Weizmann,
Israel has, for a second time,
broken with custom and por-
trayed a personality on a stamp.
The first occasion was at the
opening of the 23rd World Zion-
ist Congress in Jerusalem hon-
oring the 'memory of Theodor
Herzl.
Because of Dr. Weizmann's de-
votion to the establishment of
a Jewish homeland, the state of
Israel has re-emerged and taken
its, seat among the states of the
world in the United Nations—
and one of the ways that Israel
has chosen to honor the United
Nations is through stamp issues.
When Israel, for example, was
admitted to the International
Postal Union on March 26, 1950
—a day marking also the 75th
anniversary of the Union—the
young state commemorated the
occasion by the issuance of a

special commemorative envelope,
picturing the globe of the earth
entwined by a long narrow rib-
bon composed of the multi-col-
ored flags of the sixty' member
nations of the UN.
The ribbon starting above the
globe (imprinted at the left side
of the envelope) with the flag of
Israel. and encirclirig the earth
five times and then extending
along the bottom of the en-
velope, rising at the extreme left
towards the two commemorative
stamps, showing the biblical Zvi,
or antelope, leaping from the
earth, winds up with the Ameri-
can flag.
Other Israel issues honoring
the United Nations include tho
State's admittance to the world
organization on May 12, 1949;
World Health Day and United
NatiOns Day.

Hanukah Customs

Hanukah Candles
We celebrate Hanukah by
lighting candles every evening4
during the holiday. On the first
evening one candle is lit; on the
second evening two candles are
lit; on the third, three candles
are lit; and so, on up to the
eighth evening, on . which eight
candles are lit.
The lighting of the candles is
done in the following manner:
The person who is to perform
the ceremony lights the Sham-
ash (the serving candle) and
then recites the blessings, while
lighting the candles. The bless-
ings are followed by the 'chant-
ing of "Hanerot Hallalu" and
"Maoz Tzur" (Rock of Ages).
