Each of the Jewish holidays
has its own special mood—and
the mood of Hanukah, with its
games, its charades, its songs
and good, lusty eating, is essen-
tially one of gaiety.
As far back as the Middle
Ages, Hanukah diversions have
kept pretty well to a pattern.
The "dreidel," it is known, traces
its origin as a holiday amuse-
ment to the twelfth century or
earlier, and many of the other
traditions observed to this very
day go back even farther than
that.
But in the kitchen, traditions
keep pace with the times, and
even the Hanukah "latkes," the
traditional pancakes served as
part of virtually every Hanukah
meal, have taken on a modern
aspect, as the recipes provided
by the B. Manischewitz Com-
pany (given below) serve to in-
dicate.

JWV Plans Life-Saving
Holiday for Korean GIs

Rear Admiral Strauss

"A life-saving Hanukah gift
for servicemen in Korea" is the
idea behind a blood rally spon-
sored by the Jewish War Vet-
erans from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., on

morial Home on Davison and
Petoskey.
. Arthur Lang, chairman of the
drive, has stated that a goal of
200 pints of blood has been set
by members of the JWV. He
added, "It is hoped the com-
munity feels as strongly as we do
about making Hanukah, 1952, a
life-saving holiday."
A Red Cross mobile unit and
trained nurses and doctors will
be on hand throughout the day
to administer to those donating
the precious fluid. Anyone who
is between the ages of 21 and
65 may contribute. Those be-
tween 18 and 21 may give blood
if they have a letter from their
parents.
