This volume pays great trib-
ute to Hebraic culture. It views
the Old Testament, as the sub-
title indicates, as "the keystone
of human culture."
"The Bible," the eminent
author asserts, "was not the in-
grown musing of some remote
gr
peasant folk; it was the
achievement of a people whose
painful destiny it was to live at
the crossroads of an ancient
world; it gathered up the
best that the ancient world
created ..."
Prof. Irwin speaks of the He-
brew thinkers as having "sub-
limated and transcended their
Oriental heritage . . . making it
a new thing in the process." He
states that in a single formula
"Receive my instruction and
not silver, and knowledge rath-
er than fine gold" -- "the whole
of history is thus gathered up
for the Hebrew thinker."
Prof. Irwin's "The Old Testa-
ment" is a great tribute to Heb-
aic genius.
