DIV. IN KOREA — The Purple
Heart for wounds received in ac-
tion • recently was awarded in
Korea to a young Polish Jew,
who, during World War II,
fought the Nazis in his occupied
homeland as a guerrilla.
He is Pfc. George Kalter, 4520
N. Lawndale Ave., Chicago, Ill.,
a squad leader in the 7th Infan-
try Division.
Kalter was 11 years old when
the Germans invaded Poland in
1939. During the early days of
the Nazi occupation, he and his
family were shielded by Chris-
tian. friends, but in 1942 his par-
ents were killed by the German
police.
Kalter was separated from his
two brothers a year later when
he was taken prisoner by the
Germans and sent to a concen-

he later escaped.
In 1945 with German armies
in full retreat on both fronts,
Kalter and his underground
comrades were in the thick of
the fight near Berlin.
He entered the Army in Feb-
ruary 1951. He has been serving
in Korea with the 388th Chemi-
cal Smoke Generating Company
